transmission problem: "slips" from drive to neutral/revs back to drive

Hi all. I have a 4 cylinder 1996 Camry. Here's my problem.

1.) I'm driving along and come to a stop.
2.) I hit the gas, seems like my car slips into neutral. The revs shoot up (as there is no load). Once the revs drop, car goes back into gear.

Any insight into this? Thanks.

But yes, thank you very much, please keep any comments coming

I thought my '85 Camry did this a few times too. It did this when it was shifting though.

What color is the fluid for the tranny? it could use a change. I know I do since its pretty brownish.

The fluid is relatively clean. I changed it sometime last year. I'm guessing it's a year old.

However, the fluid seems to be pretty low. (I can't really tell where the fluid level is because I can't differentiate between fluid level vs. smear/scrapped fluid.) I threw in half a quart of ATF. After that half quart (and with the motor running), the fluid level seems to be sitting near cool. With the motor off, the fluid level is at the halfway point (between cool and hot).

I just bought another quart of ATF. I want to bring it up at least halfway (between cool and hot). Going to pour it in a bit.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it was just a low fluid issue.

Hmm...

Yea it could be the fluid. I always have problems reading the dip sticks as it keeps smearing. Takes at lease a few hald dozen tries to get an avg reading.

Yeah, I lost count how many readings I've taken. Thank you for your replies.

Will keep everyone posted. If it isn't the fluid, I'm in some deep shit, lol.

when u were describing reminded me of my old dodge shadow. I would stop at a light then when it turned green i would hit the gas, i would get going then suddenly i would have a total loss of acceleration, then it would quickly jump back.
Turned out i was just low on fluid.
6 months later i had to get a new transmission. (i'm sure thats what you wanted to hear)
