1998 XLE V6 at Watkins Glen

I'm an instructor with BMW CCA for High Performance Drivers Education. Recently I didn't take my 1997 BMW M3 to the track I took my 1998 XLE V6.

In March I updated the suspension with Tokico Shocks and Eibach Springs from recommendations in this Forum. That was a very good upgrade! I changed my brakes to Axxis Ultimates and used Super Blue brake fluid. The car handled very well and I was able to hit 110mph on the back straight before the Bus Stop.

The 1st picture is up the Esses.
The 2nd picture is through the Bus Stop
The 3rd picture is through the Toe of The Boot

I always keep my hands @ 9 & 3 on the steering wheel. You can see the amount of steering input on pictures 2 & 3! The car remained fairly flat.

Factory fogs. I hardly see them here. Only saw one Camry with them here.

I've taken my '96 Camry on a canyon run (I have a heavily modded RSX, but it was down with a broken wheel stud) and i was surprised how well it handled. I had shitty tires too.

Or it could be because I'm used to running a lot faster and since my Camry is so damn slow, it was fairly easy for me.

I might try that some day. My BMW ///M3 is really my track prepared car. This is my street car with All Season radials. The tires were squelling like pigs in every corner.

I was really pleased on how well the car handled, especially for an automatic. When I took it out with the novice students it was fun catching up with BMWs in the uphill Esses and passing them on the back straight!

I really like the Axxis Ultimates as Street Pads. I have used them before on the Camry and also use them as Street Pads on my ///M3. The amount of dust is low and I like the initial grip and the stopping grip of these for the money. Of course there are "better" pads with more grip available for the street, but I like these for overall value and capability and long life. On the track, after they heated up I got really good grip and for the speeds I was able to achieve with my Camry, the pads did a very good job slowing down the car.

I change to real racing pads on my ///M3 and use Toyo R888 tires. I also have a Ground Control Suspension and other performance parts on my ///M3.

low dust? really? i get horrific dusting with my Axxis Ultimates (on my RSX).

i'm so used to having good grip/stopping in my rsx (stoptech bbk, axxis ultimate, used to be azenis rt615 / now bfg kdw2) that i try to brake/tailgate the same in the camry and it doesn't work out so well. lol. hoping to change that with a minimal amount of money.

Maybe "low dust" is a relative term? Compared to most pads I have tried on my Camry and ///M3 the Axxis Ultimates have less dust and the amount doesn't bother me. Compared to benign street pads the Axxis Ultimates have more dust. I was comparing the amount of dust to other "performance" pads.

Do you have Drilled or Slotted rotors on the RSX?

oic.

slotted. i understood drilled was merely for aesthetics (well, in old days, for brake pad gasses) and would lead to cracking.

Of course slotted rotors will have more dust than standard rotors which is what I have on both my Camry and Track ///M3.

You are correct about drilled rotors in most cases. Most of the time they are drilled after the rotor is made. If the "holes" are part of the manufactured rotor the cracking is not nearly as bad. Also the "hole" needs to be camphered.
