Problem with transmission or possibly clutch

Hey I am driving a 1997 4 Cylinder Camry (Manual) and I'm having a bit of a problem when I put it into gear/ shift gears. The problem is that after the car is put into gear (any gear) and when gas is applied the RPM's shoot up but the car doesn't seem to accelerate, almost as if I'm still holding the clutch part way in. We've changed the gear oil, checked all the fluid levels and everything seems to be ok. If anyone could provide any insight into this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

it sounds like the clutch.

here is a way to test the clutch, that is if you can still drive your car.

1.) take your car out on a drive, let's say 30-40 mph.
2.) put your car in the highest gear.
3.) full throttle the accelerator
4.) if your rpms fly straight up and the car doesn't move, your clutch is dead.

Matter of fact we have done just that earler today after we checked everything so we were leaning towards the clutch being shot but the fact that the car still shifts without trouble deturred us from being positive that its the clutch. The car still responds to the gas its just very slow to accelerate almost like the the clutch is being engaged about 1/4th of the way.

A toasted clutch would not affect shifting. It's like worn brake pads would still allow you to stomp on the brakes.

if you thinking DIY on clutch replacement,

here is a good link

Clutch Replacement Write-Up

and here is mine
my clutch replacement with a lot of pictures

if you tried to follow the factory service manual, or chilton manual, they would probably instruct you to remove subframe, transaxle, and FYI, i've even done a transaxle swap without touching the subframe, because 4cyl camry gen3, gen4 transaxle is very smaller, and lighter.
