Newb with questions

Howdy all, got a few questions that a search didn't turn up many results for.

I'm working on my mothers 98 Camry 2.2 engine, for the past few months it has been tossing up a CEL every here and there. I reset it and it stays gone for about 3 weeks then comes back. Always has been the same code P1133, which is Air/Fuel sensor circuit response malfunction, bank 1 sensor 1. Which I take to mean is a bad upstream O2 sensor. But I don't want to gamble 75 bucks for a new sensor, when the one that's on it really isn't that old.

So first of all I'm looking for any suggestions or tips on how to verify that the O2 sensor is bad. And second I'm looking for a good Service Manual for this car. (not by Haynes because they suck). Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

if its been tossing it up for a few months now then its definatly bad. but there are easons it could have gone bad. id take a peak at the fuel filter to make sure its still good, clean out the throttle body too. any performance problems when the cel is cleared or before the cels appeared?

Nope, never has had any trouble running. Its always smooth, never stutters, and always lean. It pings like a bitch when you get down on it, but it's always been like that. The plugs were all gray when I changed them about this time last year.
Checked it over for vacuum leaks and didn't find anything except for a fairly large tube ( maybe 3/8" inside diameter) that connects to the side of the air filter box and looks like it goes down to the transmission was disconnected. Didn't seem like it was too important though.
Changed the fuel filter about 2 years ago, could be time for a new one I suppose. Ill give it a try but it didn't change anything last time it was replaced, and that one was the original, and it was clean inside.
She's had the car 6 or 7 years and put 20k on it in the whole time she's had it. It's sitting at 66.3k on the ticker now.

welcome to TN,
if O2 sensor is bad, i heard you can take it out torch it a lil and put it back and see if it solves the problem temporarily...if it does, and goes back to bad slowly then it's the sensor i suppose.

Nope, still runs just as lean as ever.

See thats the thing. There's no apparent problem with the car. It's not running an different than it ever has before, the CEL just decides to come on at random. And once the code is cleared it stays away for often up to a month before it comes back. It's just annoying.
Anyone know where I can get a hold of a factory service manual for this thing? Or know of any online resources?

Go over to Automotiveforums.com. Go to the Toyota Camry forum. At the top of that forum you will find a group of Toyota factory service manuals stickied near the top. They are available for free downloading. Download the one for the generation 4 Camry. It should have what you are looking for.

Thanks for the info Mike. I dug around in there and found how to test the heater on the sensor, but not the output of the sensor itself. I did however do some googling and found a few good pages about O2 sensors, along with how to test them, and all of them seem to say different things.
So I think Ill try to find a sensor that I know to be good and compare the results with the test I did on this one, which appears to be on its way out from what I have read, even though it isn't completely dead yet. It shows a fairly steady voltage in the slightly rich mixture range, which could account for some of the pinging. ECM may be trying to lean out the mixture some because of the reading for the sensor.
That page will definitely come in handy though.
Thanks again everyone.

No offance dude but why are you being so cheep?

Your car doesnt like the o2 sensor, so even if it "was" still good, your car wouldnt accept it. Thats why everytime you reset the code, it comes back. That means you dont have a choice but to buy a new sensor.

Maybe one day you'll also learn to test things before you replace them. Suppose this was a simple wiring problem? Are you gonna spend $75 on a sensor that you don't know for sure to be bad? Then when that sensor doesn't fix the problem you would probably return it as defective wouldn't you? When all along it could be as simple as a pinched wire interfering with the signal to the ECM. If the sensor tests fine, yet the car still throws the same codes, then it's obvious that the sensor is not the problem isn't it?

Don't question my methods, I have seen more than my fair share of people throw parts at a car and not get results. I prefer to take a little time to research the matter and test the components in question before I make the decision to replace them.
