3rd Generation FINALLY! My custom-crappily made Cold Air Intake...

After seemingly everyone else, I FINALLY put together a CAI today...

It took around an hour and half from start to finish, and removing the stock hose was the most time-consuming part of it.

On the 5S-FE, all the way to the side of the engine bay, are the two fuse boxes (as most of you know)...

And the only way to easily get the tubing out is to remove those boxes, then the stock intake tubes...

HOWEVER... on my Camry, the bolts that hold both of the fuse boxes to the engine are completely rounded-off...

... and the other one ...

So that hose wouldn't come out no matter what I used to grip the bolts!!!

And then the very same thing happened with the bottom of the stock air box itself...

The bolts weren't flat enough to wrench off, nor grip and pull...

So with both of these pieces......

I basically just ripped it off with my hand, and jimmied the stock hose through the wheel well...

As you can see, it was broken off =(

BUT anyway I ended up taking off the wheel, breaking off the second resonator, twisting and turning the stock hose through the wheel well, and setting up an amatuerish cold air intake!

Wooo....!

And.......

Leading down towards here.........

And from here it leads to...........!

Close up.....

And outside shot..............!

And that's all folks... thanks for checking it out.

What do I have to say overall about it?

It's a pretty decent mod, for the amount of money and time used.

I spent less than $100 on everything, and ended up with very minor scrapes after all the screwing up installing.

And the car feels/sounds pretty damn good after it all!

I used:

-Spectre products: 60 degree arm, 45 degree arm, High Flow Filter, Large Aluminum Tubing, Flexitubing, 5-6 couplers/braces.

-Found at autozone, kragen, any auto parts retailer (Autozone was the cheapest though).

Here's a Camera-Phone quality, sideways shot, short video of what it sounded like immediately after the install!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNKcbGsCb4E

Thanks a bunch for the inspiration, and I hope to document all my future mods too!

Not bad, but watch out for puddles during the rainy season, and how you aim the hose when you wash your car.

For sure man. I think i'm gonna try to make some sort of protectant screen for the next real reainy season, or possibly point the filter upwards.

As far as washing goes, I gotta remember that, because I'm the kind of person that tends to forget little things like that.

Is the throttle response still good? I had a 6" fliter on my car once, and it seemed to bog down a bit. I kept that filter on for a week , and got sick of the bogging. Well, that's when I had an SRI. I installed a huge 9" filter with my "new" CAI because I was afraid of bogging down again.

WTH!!! haha 9" on a camry??? lol... the mustang GT drift car had a 9" filter and it was a fully blown, bored out, 4.6L - 4.9L... lol... 900 HP

looks sick though imo..

I use a custom SRI from a 4.6L mustang motor with a nice 3-4" FAT filter and get no bogging. I also have A/F mods though, so its easily corrected. just make sure you reset your ecu, and it should get rid of the bogging.

Throttle response is superb. When I first installed an SRI about a month or two ago, I noticed, from a deadstop my car wouldn't hike up in RPM's right away.

With the full CAI there seems to be better response, and more pull after initial acceleration.

How has the 9" filter worked out for you?

I think the fact the power is sent differently with SRI's and CAI's has the most impression on the throttle.

When I had an SRI on mine, it felt like the car's torque was split in half!

AND... I reset the ecu...

My car doesn't bog down with this thing. I don't know, maybe it was just in my head. It just seemed like the 6" filter didn't flow enough air to feed the engine, then again it was when I had the SRI(with hot air from inside the engine bay). That's why I went with a 9" filter when I installed the CAI.

Well the filter I have on it currently is of good quality and all (nearly comparable to K&N and similiar) even though it is a universal one.

BUT... I've been looking around for bigger, and longer last filters after this one burns up, clogs up, blows up, or anything goes wrong at all...

Self criticism is the most honest. And the reason for cutting out the stock CAI would be?

Placement, and sound.

The stock "CAI" is much more restrictive in air flow. It's placed on the top left, to the side of the grill, but does not get nearly as much air as where mine is placed. Additionally, the place where I did stick mine, there used to be a resonator which further muffled the sound, and restricted all that free flowing cold air from shooting straight up into the intake.

Soundwise, the CAI or even an SRI will make your stock toyota sound like a bitch

But, to each his or her own. For instance some women and elderly folks prefer to drive stock wagons, but that's their choice
