THE NOT IMPORTANT STUFF:
aight, so, to start off, when looking at my car from the front, all you see is a blinding 10,000K HID set with fog lights and HID clear corners in the front...
Once I pass you, all you hear is the sound of my intake and exhaust resonating like crazy and sounding oh so good. Once you catch up, you start to notice this aint no stock camry.
The officer was kind of nice (called me a liar and a stupid ____) lol, I obviousl had him on the knowledge card (in terms of mods and the law), so he just gave me an exhaust ticket and told me to slow down a bit.
THE IMPORTANT STUFF:
I knew there was a legal decibel limit at 95dB, although he did not test it. automatically that makes the ticket void right? to make sure, I was going to get a silencer, shove it up my car's butthole and take it to a smog place to get the sound level checked. Personally, id rather not spend 10 bucks doing that. how do those silencers work anyway? could i just take a pipe and shove it in there? i am in cali btw (so cal), anyone have any experience or stories??? any suggestions? i was also thinking of printing a fake receipt and showing that to them that i fixed it, saying the car was in the shop...

Funny thing is, the only place I've been stopped because of the noise my car makes is Newport Beach.
Cops are actually kinda nice, but they give retarded tickets.
As far as I know, silencers cancel out the noise past a certain RPM. Or certain db level.
My current exhaust came w/one and past 3 grand it stayed the same loudness all the way up to redline.
If you can put together something that looks like this...
I like cops actually, but honestly, i was not speeding, i ALWAYS use a turn signal, never cut people off... I am a VERY safe driver (i think and try to be) and I always get nailed for stupid stuff.
the one that made me nuts, was me and my gf went for a walk on the beach at 11:30 one night...we got swarmed by 4 newport beach police suburbans with lights on, and i didnt move...jjust put my hands in the air, but my gf was shocked and stood up, from then on, they didn;t harass me, they harassed her!! haha, we both ended up going home that night with 2x$100 fines for being on the beach past 10pm. We had just gotten home from co that day too...bullshiit... lol, part that bothers me is, he could have just said, he look guys, you are technically not allowed on the beach past 10pm, can you please go home or move to another location... who the hell would say no to that????
haha
so anyways, should i try to go tot harbor court and tell them its an invalid ticket because the officer did not use a decibel meter at the time of the ticket? that seems to be an assumed ticket, meaning, the officer does not really know if it is illegal or not, but just guessed.

officers dont need to test the noise with a meter. i ran into a similar problem with my tinted windows. they were close to the legal limit, but an officer wrote me a ticket without taking an actual reading. he said that if they are legal tint, go to a police station and ask them to test the darkness with a meter. if its legal, they will void the ticket.
personally, ive had my fair share of tickets. since its a no-point violation, i would just pay the ticket and be done with it. its not worth your time to fight it just to have it reduced.
here. from a g35 forum, norcal section where we are lucky enough to have a chp g35 owner:
"I don't cite 21751 because it says the exhaust system has to be over 95 dB. Uh, I don't carry a dB meter, and I'm not certified to perform the test. I cite 21750. I usually cite the people that have a hole in their muffler and it sound obnoxious. It just says "excessive and unusual noise." But read on....
27150.7. A court may dismiss any action in which a person is
prosecuted for operating a vehicle in violation of Section 27150 or
27151 if a certificate of compliance has been issued by a station
pursuant to Section 27150.2, or if the defendant had reasonable
grounds to believe that the exhaust system was in good working order
and had reasonable grounds to believe that the vehicle was not
operated in violation of Section 27150 or 27151."
PLEASE DON"T FLAME.....but I like my Camry quite! I don't worry about the cops or waking up my neighbors when I come home. My Grandmother told me years ago not to do two wrong things @ once. Loud exaust...don't speed or break any other laws because you have already drawn attention to yourself with your exhaust.

Yeah I'm in the market for a quieter exhaust. I've been getting complaints about setting off car alarms going up the levels in my work's parking garage

i use My S2000's exhaust to set off car alarms on purpose (in the morning when i go to work) when my neighbors are so inconsiderate as to be blasting music at 2-3AM on weeknights. Last time they did that i set their alarms off twice a day for three days to make a point.

the problem is, by paying the fine, i need to find catback exhaust and then have it welded back on... then pay the court fees. we are looking at like 300-400 +

Find or make a good resonator, get it tested, show the court.
Can you go that route? That sounds a lot better than $300-400 ....
I found a better route. I went to 3 police stations today... First one: we do the Decibel test for 15 dollars...if its modified, its not legal...2nd one: if its modified i aint even getting out of my seat, ive been working here 29 years, i know my shit...3rd one: she gets a detective for me... told him the story, he said, yeah, the law says it just needs to be under 95dB and we dont do the test here, but if you are getting a smog check on thursday, have them test it and just bring me a receipt and ill write you off. So i guess we will see on thursday or maybe today or tomorrow if my car is under 95 dB and this cop was WRONG!!!
FOR THE FUTURE: the legality of modified exhaust: it HAS to have the o2 Sensors in place, Catalytic converters (can be high flow), under 95 dB, had to have at least one muffler and has to pass emissions testing. (also dont forget intakes are technically illegal if it doesnt have a carb number on it)

Speaking of exhausts, could anyone tell me the stock diameter for the down pipe from the manifold before the flex joint? The car is a 1997 with the 2.2L four cylinder and a 5 speed manual. The exhaust is otherwise perfect, but the flex joint is shot. I want to fix the joint with a universal replacement, but I need to know the diameter. Toyota and Walker both want to sell me a catalytic converter, because the converter, down pipe, and flex joint are only listed as a complete unit. Thank God for NAPA, they have a nice selection of universal flex joints. I am new to this forum, and a recent Toyota convert. Thanks!
My advice about the ticket is to fight it. I fight all my tickets for one reason... any tickets that stick will show up on your record, points or not. When an officer pulls you over, anywhere in the U.S., he/she sees your record. This may very well influence their decision to write a ticket, a warning, or just tell you to be safe and slow down, and let you drive off. Besides, the more unreasonable tickets written for modifications are defeated, the less likely it is that future ones will be written. And that's a benefit for everyone.
