3rd Generation Bike/Surf rack

Ok guys so ive been looking around and have yet to come up with anything decent! i need some help! (again)

Ok so I do flatland BMX and I Surf. Im sick and tired of taking 10 min just to get my bike or surfboard inside the car.... let alone dealing with wet seats and bangs from pegs hittin doors and such.. So ive decided on buying a bike rack for the top of the car.

(Yes i know yall will say it wont look good, but i dont care about looks lol im doing my car how i want it and this mod is sumthing i acually need )

So does anyone know of a good brand roof rack that can not only hold a bike but can also throw a surfboard up there as well?!?

Links are greatly accepted!!!

Chris

But of course before all this im buying Joes Borbets first :P

On other good news, my car is finally getting fixed! its getting 3 brand new motor mounts and a tranny flush today!

I'd start by looking at what Thule and Yakima have to offer. Since you want to haul a bike and a surfboard, you'll need a rack system that can handle both. If you were just hauling bikes, you could go for a quick install/uninstall trunk rack that you could easily uninstall when not hauling to keep your car looking good. But, to haul a surfboard, I think your only option(other than to just put the back seat down and slide it in through the trunk) is gonna be a roof rack.

Thule is what I use on my Honda Accord, excellent quality though it’s a little pricey upfront. However… keep in mind that you can sell the parts on ebay for a decent amount when you are eventually done with them.

http://www.thuleracks.com/fg_choices...ption_number=2

Use the Thule site to figure out what you need and be sure to write down the part numbers. Then use google to find shops that sell the products, you should be able to get it for about 20% off of MSRP. Or check ebay.

For the base system which will give you four feet firmly attached to your roof with two heavy-duty bars going across, you are looking at an MSRP of $279 (load bars, aero foot, fit kit, part numbers LB50, 400xt, and 166). Add $69 for a six-pack of locks (part number 596). Then add $60 for a surfboard carrier (Hang Two Surf Carrier, part number 554XT) and maybe $26 for sailboard pads? (not sure if you would need them). And about $125 for a bike carrier, there are many to choose from.

So, an MSRP of the mid $500’s.

When I bought my system for my Accord in ’99, I paid about $340 for the base system plus six locks and a luggage carrier and a bungee-cord net. Now that same setup would run about $480. Back then bike carriers ran about $65 to $85 but I didn’t buy one.

As Eddie mentioned, Yakima is also a good brand, check them out too. The main difference is that Yakima has round cross-bars, Thule has square cross-bars. They have a great reputation but I don't know anything about their prices.

i like the roof-top yakima racks. this way you can still get in the trunk, lock the rack and the bikes down, and not have to worry about the bikes flopping around in the wind or parallel parking.
