3rd Generation ABS or no ABS on 1993 Camry

I just bought a very good shape 93 Camry.
The brake light came on.
So I decided to mostly rebuild the braking system.

New rotors, pads, Master Cylinder and soft hoses.

Ok, I get to the auto part store, and they ask me "ABS or no ABS".

I checked the car last night, and I don't really know.
I'm weary because a tbird I had one time had really hidden the ABS stuff inside the fender.

Anyone know of a concrete way to check for the difference?

..

I didn't see any electrical wires running to the pads/caliper area, FYI.
But I don't know if that's the method.

Thanks for any/all feedback.

if there are no wires, then no abs

but the solid way to check is to look in your engine bay

on our cars, the abs module is located in the engine bay, on the passenger-side right in front of the rad support. on the 3vz, I believe that it would be hidden under the coolant overflow reservoir....or is it the windshield reservoir, which is huge and at the top....but regardless, it's in that spot, so take a look

does your car have rear discs?
is it a 4cyl or V6?

also, sometimes the brake light comes on because the brake fluid is low (or dips low when tilted)

Brake Light

It is a 4 cylinder, and has drum rear brakes.

I topped off the master cylinder as a first step.
Light stayed on.

The soft lines looked kinda old, so I replaced them. (Also did the pads while I was doing this)
Rebled the system.
Light stayed on.

So I decided to replace Master Cylinder.
That's where I hit the snag.

....

THe one thing I don't remind doing on a just purchases used car is the brakes. I like knowing how old the components are.

Of course , if I'm chasing gremlins and its a light issue, that would be good to know.

Thanks for the followup.

Also, you could try turning the key to the ON position and checking for an orange ABS light.

I don't think so... a dead break light would only illuminate the taillight out light.

Ok

Ok. I was fairly certain I didn't have ABS, but wanted to make sure.

Like I said, if it wasn't for the tbird I had with very hidden ABS components under the fender, I probably would have just went with the no ABS.

But the confirmations of no wires, rear drums and lack of a light:

gives me confirmation.

Thanks. The auto part store is a 25 minute trip these days, so knowing before I go is a big plus.

Thanks everyone!

Ok

Ok, I got the non abs master cylinder and replaced it this weekend.

The m/c bleeding (before putting it in the car) was the hardest part I guess.
That and getting one of the nuts re-started into the m/c body.
But I got it.

I got a $7 brake bleed kit from Sears. I was skeptical because it looks like a piece of tube and a cup. But it was actually more helpful than you might think.

Brake light is now OFF.

I got it inspected as well (it was due next month, but wanted to get it before something else went wrong I guess).

Thanks for the help.

On the left, right next to the coolant, if u see the silver box with wires come out, it has ABS, if not ... it's still a camry
