Unhappy Fuel Pump Problem?

We had a loud humming noise coming from the rear of our car. The noise got louder and louder and the car began hesitating and then would just completely die after about 30 miles, then worked it's way down from 30, to less and less until it would only run about 5 miles, then die. Replaced the fuel pump and both filters. Still doing it. Replaced the air cannister, removed and cleaned the gas tank. It had a lot of dirt and silt and the fuel looked like fruit tea, not gasoline. All this and when we got the car back together, it is still making that noise. The fuel pump is still making a humming noise. Did the bad fuel mess something up?

Try removing the fuel cap and see if it goes away. I hope it doesn't because I'm not sure what this would mean.

It's a long shot but maybe something got wedged into the fuel line and is acting like a reed and vibrating when the fuel is passing by it. A quick test might be to hook up a temporary line from the pump back into the tank. If the noise goes away the blockage is further upstream. If the noise remains the blockage is in the fuel pump assembly.

Did you just replace the pump itself or the whole assembly? Did you clean out the bottom of the tank? If not, whatever caused the noise before may still be there.

Other than a partial obstruction I could imagine there being a loose fitting either on the fuel pump or maybe the tank itself.

Luck

3rd Generation Fuel Pump Problem

Thanks for your help, but removing the fuel cap doesn't help. The noise sounds like the pump pumping but with difficulty. It gets really loud sometimes. A mechanic told us that if the charcoal canister gets stopped up, it can cause undue stress on the pump, so we replaced that too. And yes, everything is replaced. Go figure?

Was the fuel pump regulator changed, did a new one come with the new pump? Is the pump assy mounted OK with the rubber cushion at the bottom. Anything loose on the pump assy such as float lever parts that could cause a vibration?

Doubt if a clogged canister would cause this problem, the fuel tank should have a relieve vent to allow air to enter as the gas is pump out.
