pass side axle and snap ring

These passenger side axles are a pain. A few months ago I did a friends and it took forever to get it out of the rear mount. Since then I bought a Camry and this weekend I replaced mine. The bearing literally slid right out of the mount, no issues whatsoever. So easy to do. Now the problem.

About two days later, it slid out of the mount and the tranny. I ordered and put a new snap ring in thinking maybe the old one (93 4 cyl) had just lost some tension. I thought this solved the problem until today it slipped out again. Tonight I put it in and made sure it was in good.

To help keep it in, I took out the factory retainer bolt (I don't think did anything at all) and put in a little longer (5mm) bolt and snugged it up against the bearing. It will not slide in the mount now even with the snap ring out.

Sorry for the long post, but my question is: Will this hurt the bearing or anything else? It turns freely in N and drives fine with no apparent drag. I don't know why it keeps tossing the snap ring and popping out of the tranny but it does and I can't rely on it if that happens.

Thoughts????? Thanks

so, just to confirm here...is just the axle that is sliding out of the carrier bearing, or is it the carrierbearing and axle that's sliding out?

but regardless of that fact, I have to say that it's funny how you're having the opposite problem that most of us have, which is that the axle won't ever come out of the carrier bearing since it's seized in

and in either case, I would say that more than likely, the bearing casing was damaged during your uninstallation and it now doesn't sit as snug as it should- thus, the use of both the bolt and the c-clip doesn't hold it in place (there is a lot of lateral forces pushing that bearing aounrd)

The axle+bearing is sliding out of the mount. No one was more suprised than me it slid out as easy as it did, especially after the last one I did

I'm thinking along your lines in that the mount is actually the damaged part in that it may be wore out enough that the bearing isn't a perfect fit anymore. Knowing that, does anyone think I will cause any actual damage with the bolt I have used?

Keep in mind this is an older, cheaper Camry I picked up and is not used on a daily basis.

Just to address another point in your post- no damage during taking it out. Slid right out, literally.

Is the snap ring seating in the groove? The ring should seat firmly and not pop out.

Have had the bearing easily slide out of the mount, thus not uncommon.

Ring is in the groove. I read other similar posts that mentioned diff fluid. I'm not sure how low gear oil would result in my axle popping out but I did top off the fluid by about .25 qt.
