3rd Generation Car cuts off when shifts to drive

Hey wassup guys I own a 95 camry and I stop driving it a year ago because of this I ended up buying a gen6 but I would like to get this car back on the road for daily driving... Here are the symptoms, when I turn the car on it kinda sounds like its revving or gasping for air and then the needle shoots up 2500 to 3000 rpm and while it idles that high if I try to put it in Rev or Drive it would cutoff... Took it to the shop they said it was the distributor so I changed it not oem but 1 from autozone....Still same issue took it to a local mechanic an he did some riculous BS!!! Basically when I got my car back there was a switch which he installed under the side mirror switch and he told me that he bypassed the fuel pump? something like that and before I turn the car on I should cut it on and turn it off when the car is off.... Did absuolutely jack for me and to top it off he charge me like 300 or 400... He better had not hold his breath!!! Anyway my father inlaw decided to give it a shot ran the cpu on it and the codes read it to be the igniter so I had that changed.... Worked good for about a week! Couldn't take it anymore so I bought a gen6 but I would like to get it running and modded for the road.. Any help would be useful if not I guess I'll have to take it to the dealer

Dang, that mechanic ripped you off big time! 400 for a switch that didn't even fix the problem? I'd be pretty angry about that. Good mechanics are hard to find these days. The problem does seem fuel spark related, but it could also be electrical. My little brother has a similar problem with his saab. He'll start it up and then as soon as he puts it in reverse it dies and all of the lights are going haywire. We suspect a short somewhere, but finding it is going to be a royal pain in the butt. If you haven't yet, I'd try getting a free electrical system test. Most places will do that. Also make sure your intake system has no leaks, that could also cause a problem like that.

If it has been sitting for a year without running you probably have fuel that has gummed up in several different places. Have you drained the old fuel out and put in new? If you could get it to run you could put in a gas additive cleaner (Sea Foam is recommended often on this board.) and see if it might not help. Otherwise, look to clean out the throttle body and the IAC valve. Maybe the injectors. If it still has a problem check your gas flow and pressure. Let us know what you find out.

Order it? You don't have Autozone or anything like that near you?
