3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
About a week ago, I was driving and my water pump seized causing the timing belts teeth to tear off. I decided to go and change my timing belt myself. I get the belt on, start up the engine and discover the timing was off because it was misfiring like crazy. So I take the belt off, properly align and tension the belt, rotated it 720 degrees to make sure it was perfectly aligned. It was spot on. Then I go and start the engine, It cranks, but won't ignite. I pull out a spark plug, ground it and do a spark test. Nothing. Change out the rotor, distributor cap, spark plugs, and wires. Still Nothing. I check the resistance of the pickup coils. It's within range.
I was going to check the resistance of the coil, but I can't figure out where it is and how to check it. I was thinking perhaps it could be a crankshaft position sensor, but I can't for the life of me figure out if I have one or where it would be.
Please help me figure out why in the hell it stopped sparking.
Did you check primary voltage (12v) to coil from ignition switch? Check coil to cap wire resistance (secondary). Check condenser. No crankshaft position sensor on that car. Coil (internal type) primary resistance = .4 -.5 ohms, secondary resistance = 10 - 14.3 ohms.

1) How do I check primary voltage to coil?
2) Where is the condenser, how do I check it?
3) How can I measure resistance of primary and secondary resistance of the coil?

The engine is for sure grounded, I checked that it was grounded.

Yes, it's all in the correct firing order. Even if it wasn't, if I took the spark plug out to check for spark, it would still spark.
If the cam pulley (there is only one) is lined up the exhaust will be lined up also.
IIRC there was a DIY post about the # of teeth or cogs that you can mark with white out and then do the 720 degree rotation check.
if you have spark, is contact at distributor made at correct timing? I know the first time I did a Tbelt change, I did not replace the crank angle sensor and that took me awhile to figure out.

I think it's time to buy a Haynes Manual. All explained there with pictures, only $18 at Advance Auto.

I already have a chilton's manual. It didn't really tell me exactly how to do it with my specific engine though.
I was just wondering if someone could kindly answer those questions for me.
The belt is on, perfectly aligned and properly tensioned. I know this as a fact. I can rotate it 720 degrees over and over and it's still spot on.
To clarify: THERE IS NO SPARK EVER. If I take a spark plug out, connect it to the spark wire, and hold it against ground, there is no spark. I'm not sure as to why there would be no spark all of a sudden.
The first time I put the belt on, I had it off by a few teeth, started it up, and it ran, but it ran very badly. So I took off the belt and got it perfectly aligned and tensioned. Now it won't start because there is no spark.
does your car use crank sensor (inside timebelt)?
does your car use coil start sensor (inside the timebelt)?
have you check all other sparkplug wires by taking the sparkplugs out and see a sparkplugs?
when you take out the beltbelt? how many sensor were inside the timebelt..some model use coilstart sensor inside timebelt to creat a spark to fire up the car? i don't know if this apply to your model..
