3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
both have economy heads that dont flow great, but that can be fixed with machining ... both have similar blocks and make EXTREMELY similar numbers ... also have similar applications
but of course, the F22 is a Honda engine - which means an aftermarket ... so thats why people have F22 cars running 9sec 1/4 miles and we have 5S cars running 18sec 1/4 miles
... was just talkin it over with some local car guys, its sad really

i've always wondered why there is so much aftermarket support for honda than toyota. the sad thing is that its like this for pretty much all of toyota and honda lineups. i cannot understand why there are more aftermarket parts for an accord than a camry. it really seems like if you drive a honda, you have your own endless choice of mods while we toyota guys are stuck with trd - if the parts we need exist - or some super expensive brand because nobody else makes it but them. its really sad.
since we are on the topic of limited mods for a camry, i have some questions about the choice of mods for a camry. i've been driving an 97 i-4 camry sedan for about 2 weeks now and i have to say its a pretty solid car. my previous car was an 1987 corolla sedan (ae83) that has been in my family eversince my uncle bought it new. that version of the corolla never had the aftermarket support of the corolla gts (ae86), i thought since i would be driving a fairly new car, the choice of mods would be there. i was wrong since most of the good mods are available for the v6 model.
so far, all the mods i've done are cosmetic like changing my headlights to h4 hid bulbs and changing the green oem dash lights to red ones. i decided i will not go all out in terms of mods since it does get costly and it really is a disease. the next mod i will be doing is changing the exhaust pipes and exhaust. i'm gonna go with 2" piping and i really want to go with a chamber exhaust cause going with a cannister type would look ridiculous since the camry is a family car. i will most likely get a magnaflow xl cause i like how it sounds and how it performs - i had one for my old corolla. however, i haven't decided whether to go with an 2.5" or 3" outlet. i know opening the exhaust will reduce low torque, but allow better flow for higher rpms. i would like suggestions based on experience, nothing theoretical.
after exhaust, i'm thinking about intake and air filter. i know k & n is a highly reputable company, but does anyone have experiences for intakes from other brands?
i will most likely leave springs and wheels/tires as the last things to change. i seen springs from tein that drop the ride quite a bit, but are pretty expensive. wheels/tires will set me back $1,000+ so i'll leave that for later if i do change it.
i dislike honda's for various reasions but if you put a 1mz into a civic you would have a hell of a beast... :/...
so as to not cause an uprise of "your lame" 's and "get off the forum" 's i hesitantly mention
GSR or K20 swap into a 3rd gen that had the 5s (you complain about aftermarket support i bring up ideas that should be forsaken, and really are :/...)
though the ultimate would be building a new subframe for the cam cutting a drive line and going 2jz or 1jz :/... *daydreams of drifting around in a RWD camry*
wheres the AWD info at? didnt someone take the all-track and attempt at putting it in a sedan 3rd gen?...
if anyone knows i really wanna talk to them or have an update to see whats up with it, i know one specific person was going to do it or pondering it :P btw you know who you are and i say to change it up when you do install a rav4 hoodscoop :P it will look sick *top mount* *nuff said*
it is a real shame. honda and toyota are so similar in their aproach to cars but honda discovered that little VTEC thing and until the VVTL-I, toyota hasnt had anything like it so why would anyone bother when VTEC is what makes honda cars stand out and good for modding...even the ones without VTEC.

How many people are running F22A4 SOHC Hondas at 9 sec 1/4 mi? I bet most have the DOHC H22, or DOHC b series engines.
