newbie on TN lots of miles, runs good need help on speedo issue UPDATE !!!
PROBLEM SOLVED!, if your car has speedo issues, just replace the cluster, mine now reads right on the money after swapping it out!
I have a 94 camry 4 cyl 5 speed DX coupe. (pictured below) the speedo reads pretty close to about 10 mph off. I have done the search, but all threads related to this issue had no resolutions.
I already tried a new speed sensor, which did nothing. the odometer is off a little bit too, not much, but it does read a little more , since the speedo reads higher than the actual mph.
anyone know how to fix this? could it be as easy as a speedo swap?
Car has 337,xxx on it ! 2nd trans.
the 15" 5 spoke rims are coming off, and steelies going on. (I want to make it un-attractive to thieves)
it looks pretty good for that many miles! hood and drivers fender are flat black, thanks to the paint oxidizing.
I installed a stock 3rd gen 4runner CD player, and I am adding cruise control (I hate not having cruise!) it lacks A/C, which I could use right now, very hot!

Reason: update on the problem
mine reads off, too. four mph short @ 70mph, and wavers up to 4mph too - confirmed by GPS. my tires are shorter than stock, so that explainst the first 4mph, but the wavering is probably my speedo going bad.
so, verify that your tires are the right size! then, since it's a pulse-width modulation controlled meter, if the speed output reluctor wheel air gap isn't wrong, then it's your speedo.

european cars are just like japanese cars, just heavier and more expensive.
7 ASE's.
are you sure its not the flux capacitor? Just kidding, it sounds like you know what you are talking about.
Just to confirm one thing, does the ECU have ANY input on the speedo, or is it changed over in the cluster itself, and then a signal sent to the ecu? (I know the ecu get s signal at some point)
if the speed sensor signal goes directly to the cluster, then its a no brainer fix, replace the cluster.
OH and I do have same as stock sized tires. ( I have 15" wheels, but the tires are the same outer diameter, and even if there were a minor variance, it would not make it that far off on the speedo!

Reason: answered a 2nd questrion
nice coupe man. but i wouldnt worry bout theives. if i can park my car as modded as it is in southeast DC and be ok im sure you stock head unit and 15s will be fine if thats all there is. but then thats just me.
i wasnt aware that you could add cruise to this car with a manual tranny. at least ive never seen anyone do it...to any manual car for that matter.
thanks, and as far as adding cruise, I have done it before, but not on a camry. I already have the control switch for the steering wheel mounted in place off a parts car I found, but the actuator was already gone, and the cruise computer needs to be 94 or 95 ONLY.
I have ordered an actuator and a computer for the cruise off ebay, so I will keep you updated. ALL the wiring is already there.
the only snag I might have is the throttle body, the ones with cruise have the necessary groove for the cruise cable, I am not sure yet if mine will work, but if not, that is an easy swap.
I swapped the 5 stars for some steelies today, If I can't sell the 15"s I will probably just get snow tires for the steelies, never hurts to have a set of those!
That has to be the first Gen3 camry without an A/C unit (or button for that matter). I thought A/C was already standard in these Camry, Base line or not.
not sure if it was only an option to have a 5 speed in a dx, but usually the dx is the most bare-boned model. Roll up windows, manual door locks, possibly only a am/fm radio.
but I met someone with a 5 speed CE and his has cruise.
and like I said mine is wired for it, I just have to install the missing parts.
It may have been an option when new to get it, but this one was pretty bare on options.
Yea. I don't even use A/C even though I have it. It helps to have A/C though when it rains like hell since the fan from outside circulation only causes fog inside normally. I've become spoiled with power windows though...
I guess we all take for granted for 'standard' options nowadays.
Would be interesting to see how the cruise would work after it is added in.
it will work the same. Its basically a stand alone system. Its all wired, and I have the necessary parts coming (off used toyotas.) My cluster even has the light for the "cruise" installed from the factory.
on a side note, my camry seemed fast while the speedo was off. kinda fun doing over 30 in first (without red lining the needle!) but now back to reality.
I am hoping that my gas mileage improves a bit, possibly the speedo being off was dumping more fuel into the engine, thinking it was at a faster speed? now that it reads properly, it may not squirt as much gas in the engine.
