3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just picked up a 96 Camry and noticed that the front windshield defroster does not work well unless you switch on the A/C. So my question is are they linked together or must you turn on the A/C separately. Everything appears to be working.
If you live in a humid climate, it's normal for the front defroster to not work very well without the AC turned on. When the air goes thru the AC's evaporator (the radiator that cools the air), some humidity condenses on it. Then it goes thru the heater core to warm it back up. The result is that you get drier air blowing on your windshield which does a better job of defogging it. Here in desert-dry CO, it's usually not necessary to do that. Which is why I'd rather not have the AC come on automatically when running the defroster.

I believe Toyota integrated the A/C with the defroster setting on the generation 4 Camry; that is, beginning with the 1997 model year. Before that you have to manually turn on the A/C when in defrost mode.
bors - I just thought of something. When you run your defroster and the windshield fogs up, can you smell antifreeze? If you can, you probably have a heater core leak.

Thanks Mike, I suspected that might be the case. The defroster works OK it's just very slow unless I turn on the A/C, reminds me of my old camaro LOL. I just wanted to make sure before I go tearing the dash apart chasing after ghosts. I will let my daughter know that what she has to do in the mornings is turn on the A/C with the defroster.
