96 odometer over registering

I religously keep track of miles driven and gallons of gas purchased for my 96 V-6 automatic Camry. I became suspicious when last month calculated out to around 35 mpg, plus we couldn't account for the total number of miles travelled for the most recent fill-up. I thought perhaps one of us just forgot to record a gas purchase but was able to eliminate that by checking receipts.
So... Yesterday I did a check against the mile markers along the interstate and found out the the odometer is over reporting miles travelled by about 30%.
There have been no changes to wheels, tires, or anything esle that might affect the odometer accuracy. The most recent repair was replacement of the right front axle several months ago, but everything seemed fine until just recently.

The trip ododmeter reading and the total miles odometer reading are consistent. I have not bothered to check speedometer accuracy yet since that wasn't necesary to answer my question about the over reporting of miles travelled.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this? I know the older cars used to have a gear/cable that could cause problems but I assume the newer stuff has electronic sensors, etc. Is the miles travelled information picked up from transmission or at one of the wheels?
This forum has never let me down so I'm looking forward to your replies.

thanks

It sounds like a speed sensor. If you have ABS you should have a sensor at each axle, if you don't have ABS you should have one sensor somewhere on your tranny. I believe this to be accurate, but double check with someone to be sure.

also if it is a speed sensor I would imagine that your speedo should be over reading by about 30%.

4-wheel discs, but no ABS.

Can someone confirm that the problem is likely caused by a speed sensor, and also give me an idea of where on the tranny to look for it.

I thought all cars had the reg speed sensor and abs cars had extra speed sensors next to the rotor.
I would check the speed sensors inside the axle? the reg one.

The vehicle speed is registered off the vehicle speed sensor, which is mounted just over the output shaft of the transmission. If I remember correctly (it's been a while) the odometer runs a bevel gear off of the speedometer head, which gets it signal from the VSS.
