Picked up my Deep Creep this afternoon and was about to clean the TBI when I noticed the air intake hose has a small crack inside the clamp, but over the TBI throat (is that the plenum?).
I decided against pulling the hose off figuring it'd go from "small, if any air leakage" to "gaping hole of suck" and ran around pricing it (I had to pick up a new PCV grommet anyway). Advance has one at $92, and few online sites are ~$80 including shipping- a little more than I have for my new hobby :P
Is this the sort of part I'd be able to find a decent replacement for at the pick-n-pull, or am I likely to just find more cracked/crappy ones?
If I were to remove it and managed not to wreck the hose, is there any kind of epoxy/silicone/something that could seal the crack?
when i got my sri i was missing an intake hose. i just got some plastic tubing used for fish tanks and such i think and used that. probably not the best thing to use but it has held up fine
Same happened when I pulled the intake hose off for the first time when I was going to clean the throttle body of the FS-FE and the neck-end of the intake hose was ripped right off. Fortunately the engine ran just fine when I reattached what left of the intake hose back to the throttle body. $80 buck for the intake hose? Nah, you can find one for half the price or less on eBay. In the meantime, silicone will do a good job of sealing the fissures of your air intake hose.
This is the exact reason I just bought a cheap ebay SRI. The OEM one overtime breaks down some with all the heat....not to mention other people owner/mechanics who just yank back the intake tract during air-filter changes. When I saw the prices for an OEM intake, I almost choked (they were more expensive 5 years ago). Buying a junkyard one didn't appeal to me as it would likely be in as bad of condition (if you did find one).

I'm the biggest boss thatchu seen thus far! Baby, that's muh wi'zzard!
After reading the DIYs here and swinging through Pep Boys, I think I'm gonna go custom. It'll probably be a couple weeks before I actually do it (gotta work the OT to create some funds), but it looks like fun project.
I'll seal up the crack with silicone for now, and start planning the pieces I'll need.
