4th Generation My Ghetto CAI (About time!)

Well finally I made a ghetto CAI. Today I garbed a few Items a Home Dept and cost around $20 for everything. 4X8 Duct hose, 5X4 Aluminum reducer and a PL Flash. Took about 2 hours to do everything, wasted time trying to remove that stupid S pipe. Everything came out perfect, it clears the bumper with a center meter to spare! I only wished that I used a different duct hose, the one I used it like the Aluminum paper foil. Well here's a pic more pic coming soon!

PS It is near the center because I do not want the duct to hit the radiator, need to make something to push it away a little

I would HIGHLY advice you to go buy some exhaust tubing and remake the CAI.

I rolled on dryer duct tubing for like 1 week. But i couldnt trust that stuff. Engine vibrations, going up n down hills, potholes, dips. I had a feeling that sutff would brake. So i got some jcwhitney exhust tubing and remade the CAI. Plus as an added bonus the tubing doesnt have any ridges, so less turbulence. Oh and its removable for those emission tests.

Very nice! Did you use the existing air box? or has it been changed out to something different?

The duct is 4 inches wide and later on, I will take some exhaust tubes to replace the duct. I need to find some mesh screen to keep the and other things out.

The duct goes pass through the hole (Triangle shape)where the stock air box was and ends about a inch away from my SRI. I have those Spectre Universal SRI @ Autozone, It works well but want to replace it soon. (You could use your stock air box, connect it at the bottom)

Now I just need to make a box where my cone filter is so it does not suck unnecessary heat from the engine.I guess I have to go back to Home Depot and see.

Oh, cool- I've been looking at those Spectre ones at Pep Boys. What kits/parts would I require/did you use? Any pics of it available?

Do at your own risk, I am not responsible.

Well for the ram air extension, go to Home Depot. All the parts needed is in one isle, Air ducts for washing machines.

Parts:
079916430485 4X8 Duct $9.49 (Dryer hose/duct)
050206925607 5X4 Reducer $5.59 (Cone shape)
038753119380 PL Flash $4.63 (Flat plastic w/ rubber hole)

Tools:
Drill
2-4 Metal Screws
Metal scissors
Electrical Tape
Flat head Screw Driver
10mm Socket (To remove top bumper bolts)
Hose Clamps (Optional)
Double Sided 3M tape (Optional)
Glue (Optional)

Note: If you have fog lights you need to do some modification to clear the opening to the raim air intake. I do not think you can do this with OEM fog lights.
Steps:
1. Take the pl flash, black plastic square with angled rubber hole and cut the mark that allows a 4 inch diameter pipe to fit.
2 Using metal scissors, cut the 5 inch diameter part off. Cut it were it bends to make the cone shape.
***Optional: Take some black electrical tape and tape the edges that just been cut to make it look better and to protect your hands.
3. Using metal scissors, cut the other side, put only cut the 4 inch diameter cylinder in half. Without doing this you will have some problems clearing the radiator.
4. Then shove the modified 5X4 reducer and slide it through the rubber hole, making sure that the 5 inch diameter part is on the front. When you buy it there will be a sticker on the BACK, Keep on pushing it so it stays there pretty good. Then take some black electrical tape taping the 5X4 Reducer to the rubber piece.
***Optional: You can even take a little glue to make it hold better.
5. Making sure that it will be facing the right way (the reducer should be leaning to the left) cut around the hole leaving the top alone. Just the bottom and sides! You need to leave the top alone so you can mount it.
CUT the BOTTOM really close to the hole to allow clearence.
5. Attaching the duct/hose is really simple. You can tape it with black electrical tape or hose clamp. I recommend the hose clamp because it will hold better without worrying the tape coming undone.
6. Now, the next few steps will be at your car. It is not much. First you have to remove your front bumper cover along with the bumper reinforcement (foam).
7. Once removed, on the driver side there will be a clear container and two bolts are holding it. (10mm) You have to remove this, it just a intake container.
---Three Options---
8.A and C. Remove the S bend black pipe that is between the fender and turn signal. I think there is a screw holding it. (I cut mine off with a knife)
B. If you are planning to hook it to the end of the S pipe skip a few steps.
9.A If you already have a SRI, you need to do nothing.
C. If you don't have or want a SRI remove your stock air intake box. Remove the clamp on the hose to the box and pull it apart. Remove the top cover, hold with simple clamps. Open it and remove the filter, the unscrew the bolts and pull the bottom piece out.
10. Now it is time to mount it to the metal bumper rail. Take the part, some tape and tape it where you like it. Then drill two holes on top, then use some metal screws to hold in place. You might need to bend the hose to make it fit and keep it away from touching the radiator.
***Optional: Use some double sided 3M tape to hold it better.
11. Once it is mounted, bend it near the driver fender/turn signal. Use some wire to keep the hose in place. You need to bend it where the hook is on the bottom.
---The Three Options---
12. A and C. Take the duct, push and bend it where the S pipe was. It should be coming out near the battery.
-A. leave it there pointing to the cone filter.
-C. Now attach this to the bottom of the OEM intake box base, using black electrical tape or hose clamps. Then reinstall the box, put filter on and attach hose.
B. Attach this to the bottom of the black S pipe using black electrical tape or hose clamp.
13. To install the OEM bumper you need to cut the driver side tab (the tab that attaches to the bottom of the metal bumper bar) With-out cutting this, you can't install the bumper because the tab will get in the way with the opening of the ram air. (With the Evo4 bumper, I did not had to cut the bumper)
14. Now attach you bumper on. You might need to take the bumper off and bend the duct to get a perfect fit!

You mentioned the Spectre SRI- was there a particular kit you used? Is that what you have coming off the TBI?

I bought the Universal Plastic Spectra Intake kit (The one that you can buy pieces to add on) and a Spectra cone shape filter. If you are buying an intake tube do not get that one, get the Universal Aluminum Spectra Intake but the APC Universal Intake kit, is the BEST. You can buy at Advance Auto Parts about $60(comes with intake tube, filter, vacuum hoses and flexible plastic tube) Just hook it up to the throttle body and put the filter on the other end. To hold mine up, I took some wire and tied it to the strut bar I have. You want the cone filter as close to the battery and fender as possible. So now the ram air duct can be close to the cone air filter as possible.

PS: I am changing my SRI.

You should remove the air filter, connect the pipes together and put the filter in the front of the car.

or

Create some kind of enclosure around ur air filter, that connects to the dryer tubing.

The way you made it, the car will take most of the air from the engine bay. Also the only force moving the outside air into the engine bay through your tube, is gonna be the wind from your car hitting the car. By connecting the tubes, your engine will suck air from the outside.

Also paint the tubing inside the engine bay. Use white ceramic paint. That'll keep it the most cool.
