3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
ok heres my story. i was driving home on the freeway going about 60mph as i come to traffic i let the car coast till i need to gas again about about 40mph. when i pressed the gas the car didnt go and the car revved. so i let go gas and my speedo went to 0. i pressed the gas again and the speedo jumped to whatever i was going at and the car started going again. it happened like 2-3 times in a row. once i got home i told my dad about it and we checked the tranny oil. that has to be changed but i was wondering if i needed a new clutch already? or could all these problems be because of the tranny oil. its already brown so i know its not a good sign. can anyone help? thanks!
specs:99 auto 5s-fe

Well your specs say you have an automatic trans, so you don't have a clutch. Check your trans fluid level. My 96 did that once way back, the trans fluid level was dipping past low, and caused the trans to slip.
Letting the trans fluid get so far gone for it to turn brown is VERY bad. It should be a medium to dark red color. I suggest having the trans flushed at a good shop, and refilling with new fluid.
See, I have a different kind of 'slippage' if you will? When I start my car from cold and put it in drive, the RPMs will NOT go past 2000 no matter HOW much I press on the gas! You would think that if my tranny was slipping, the RPMs would shoot up while holding the gas and the car would not go. But MY car just stays at 2000 RPM for about 10 seconds or so before it will allow me to speed up.
Anyone ever heard of this before?
Sorry to thread jack, but Im interested in slippage also, and these are the first 2 cars Ive owned with auto trannies in them.

97, it sound more like that has something to do with the engine itself, not the trans. That or your trans is starting you out in 2nd or 3rd gear, then shifts back down into first.
I've never heard of that happening.

hmm...an engine problem? What in the engine could be causing this?

If your car is still moving the speedometer when to 0, that seems to indicate that one of your sensor is not sending the correct signal to the ECM. The ECM needs to know how fast the car is moving (vehicle speed sensor input) and how fast the engine is turning (input speed sensor input) in order for it to control the transmission and engine fuel system.
An automatic transmission still have clutches in it, except it is always soaked in transmission fluid, and it is in clutch packs; however, if they are slipping you would have a burnt fluid smell in the fluid, not a very good smell.
I would check to see if there is any pending code in the system, may be it will point you in the right direction to your problem.
You might wanna check your spark plugs; at one point my car has a similar problem, and it turned out that one of the cylinder's wasn't firing. The car couldn't accelerate for shit and it would shake like crazy.
