Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
First of all, please forgive me for my poor English. I have been in this forum for a while but this is my first post. Most of time I am just looking and gathering info from you guys, thanks.
I finally decide to upgrade my 01 Camry XLE so I bought a supercharger from one of the member here. I spent two days to install the s/c and everything is working now, at least I think so. Here are pictures after s/c is installed.
The supercharger does make a lot of difference. My Camry is much more responsive now. I'm very happy with the result. I took her to a nice ride after the installation.
A/C makes much more noise than before when in idle tho. When A/C kicks in, there is a rumbling sound coming from passenger side of engine. I noticed that the belt tensioner was vibrating more than A/C was not running. Maybe this is what making the noise. So maybe the belt or tensioner needs to be replaced? Or maybe it just I didn't installed it right? I'll spend some more time to figure it out.
Another thing I noticed is after 4k rpm, the rpm raised much slower, compare from 2k~4k. Maybe this is normal? It feels like the engine is not getting enough air or fuel. I'm running 4 psi now.
Anyway, so far I'm happy with the s/c, especially the boost sound.
Beside the s/c, I also installed Eibach pro kit springs, Tokiko struts, Hayden ATF cooler and NGK spark plugs. It feels like I have a whole new car. Hahaha...
nice car man, glad your finally posting your prolly running really lean. that was a problem i was having when i first got this car. best things to get are the walboro 190lph fuel pump and at leas the "jim's fuel mod" which balances the fuel delivery to the front and rear banks. thoes thing are often for sale on solaraguy.com more then here since all teh parts are compatible between the 2 cars. i would advise getting at least the fuel mod soon so as to protect your O2 sensors and protect against detonation. later a tune and the fuel pump would be a good idea.
since yor also workin with all stock parts for the exhaust and intake then high RPM flow will be hurt a little but ill bet you have more tq then i do with all that modded.
Thank you all for the advices. I understand stock intake, exhaust and fuel delivery are not the ideal for S/Ced 1MZ, especially in high RPM. But they work just fine. These mods are on my list but not for the very near future, unless I have very lean condition in high RPM or I win a big lottery.
I'll try to get A/F ratio for all RPM range to see how they are then decide what my next mod will be. If all A/F ratio look fine, I may stay with it for a while. Need to figure that rumbling sound first. I still like quieter car.
I'm also very happy for my new springs and struts. They make my car less comfortable but much better control. I know my old struts are really worn out, they served for 125k, but Eibach+Tokiko really rocks.

well i can promise your A/F ratio is lean under boost i had the same setup as you cept with intake and exhaust, which makes no differance, and i was lean...pretty bad too. so unless ya want to be replacing o2 sensors in the near future then at least find one of the fuel mods or go easy on the boost.
whats the rumbling sound? when does it happen? was it there before the SC install?

Bigbird, thank you for sharing your experience. Base on you and other peoples suggestion, I think I better start looking for some fuel upgrade to save my engine or prevent problems from happening.
That rumbling sound only happens when car is park or stop and A/C kicks in. It was not there before I install SC. It seems like coming from somewhere in pulley plate or somewhere near there. The tensioner does vibrate more when this rumbling sound occurs.
Dawgz, thanks for the info. $350 sounds not too bad. Are they direct fit? I have heard some fitting problem about ebay headers. Also, will this cause any problem to pass smog check since it doesn't have precat and I'm in cali?
A TRD front strut tower bar will be nice but need to find one first. I'll take some more pictures once I have a chance. My car is really dirty now. Haven't wash it for about a month or longer. I agree with highflow cat and better intake system, will get them sometime in the future.
CEL came on for me on my way back home last night. I got the code and it's P0401 - EGR insufficient flow. I think it's not caused by SC. Maybe vacuum leak somewhere or I damaged VSV or VCV while installing SC. I checked EGR valve and it seems ok. I checked all hoses and they looked tight. I'll check VSV first since people said it most likely the problem for P0401.
