3rd Generation Quick Help. Labor Costs...

Searched and didn't find complete info I was looking for...

My car needed engine mounts replaced for a minute and its finally making scary noises so I ordered everything to be done with it...

Front, Rear, Trans, and dogbone mount coming in hopefully today and besides the dogbone mount dealing with the mounts will be too much for just me and I need a quick fix.

So I need a ballpark on what to expect on labor costs for the front, rear and transmission mount on a 1995 Toyota Camry 2.2L 4cyl Automatic to be specific.

I searched and didn't find anything about labor estimates. Not taking it to a dealer here since they will rape me.

So what should I expect on just labor so I can know if I'm being ripped off or not. Am in a situation so my moms is paying for the labor so trying not to owe her much

On a side note does anyone ever had to replace the transmission mount??? Thats where the scary noises is coming from when accelerating hard turning left...plus there ain't transmission mount DIY so im guessing theres a reason why...

At least labor costs for just the front and rear would be really helpful!!!

Not sure where you are, but around here, most places charge approx $85-90 per hour. Some probably more.

If you can find a good mechanic you trust, they may just charge you by the job. This is what mine does, and works out better than if it was done on the clock. [pays to have connections sometimes!] Mine looks at what needs to be done, how long it normally will take, and then just tells me $x. and if it includes or doesn't include parts. Usually its how much to do + parts, but a lot of the time I get the parts myself.

Good luck!

The mechanic I go to usually charges by the job no matter how long it takes and I don't "look" around for prices but every time I did stuff here it was just for labor and it was pretty cheap compared to what I hear from my uncles. Also I don't trust them too much either.

I'm looking at the DIY for the front and rear and it's tempting for me to do the job myself if anything at least the front since I can't slide under the car especially since it should be done under an hour for the front.

Right now I'm just going back and forth on should I do it myself or not. There ain't no transmission mount diy so I'm lost on that.

I you have a jack or engine hoist the front is relatively easy, the rear is a bit more difficult. You can either use a jack and a piece of wood between the jack and oil pan and slowly raise engine up and unbolt front mount or use the hoise to raise engine up and replace mount. With the rear mount its the same concept just less space to get to the mount bolts.

I don't have definite labor costs, but front, dogbone and transmission mounts shouldn't be charged more than 2 hours labor, with a standard labor rate around here going for $80/hr. The rear mount will take on average an hour labor charge at least.

On the 4 cylinder models, with air tools and spraying down the bolts good beforehand a decent mechanic should be able to have every mount removed and replaced in under 2 hours. This I can say from experience. If you have an impact wrench and some swivel joints and extentions, the rear mount shouldnt' be too bad either, just raise the engine and wiggle the mount out/back in.

The tranny mount isn't that bad to replace, either. You just need to place a piece of wood between the tranny pan and the jack, raise the transmission side and remove the bolts/mount and install the new one.

exactly what renmike said about the trans mount. none of them are hard, just a pain to get to on some occasions. Just NEVER raise the engine or trans with just a jack...ALWAYS place a piece of wood between the two.
