97 Camry XLE remote issue

So I've had my '97 Camry XLE for over a decade now (original owner ), and I just recently dug out my remote alarm from a box of junk in my closet. Seeing as how I still drive it and all, I tried replacing the batteries in the remote, only to find that the lock/unlock buttons do not work, while the red panic button functions flawlessly. Since I have not seen this remote in quite a while (at least 5+ years), I was wondering, could the buttons/remote be broken? Or am I just dealing with a case of having to reprogram the remote to work with my camry?

The remote I own is the 3 button remote with all three buttons on one side, with the lock/unlock keys above the red panic button.

Is that your only remote? If the panic button is working, that means the remote is transmitting and receiving. It is possible that the buttons are mess up, but I would definitely try re-programing first. Did you actually replaced the battery or you just tried?

I might have another somewhere (I vaguely remember being given 2 at the time of purchase), but for now it's lost. Before I replaced the batteries in the remote the red button did not work either; I just bought and put in the batteries this morning.

I'll have to do some hardcore digging for my car manual, so is there anywhere I might be able to find instructions on reprogramming? I have tried several methods (such as the purple-to-black/white method by pulling out the mirror control unit), but have been unsuccessful so far.

I don't have it off hand. I did a search of the site and came up with this, Compilation: Programming Remote entry for GEN4 camry, or call up a dealer and ask them, they might be willing to make a photocopy of the instruction for you.

You can download a generation 4 Toyota Camry factory service manual. It is stickied at the top of the Toyota Camry forum over at AutomotiveForums.com. It should have the procedure. I would download and save the entire manual to disc for future reference.
