4th Generation 1998 Camry (4cyl) clutch issue.

I have a 98 4 cyl and I think the clutch is on it's way out.

When I shift into any gear and gently hit the gas the revs go up but the speed does not. It's almost like free reving. After a few seconds the rev's and speed begin to be in sync. Even after all this if I'm in the proper gear for that speed and I hit the gas RPMs will go up fast but the speeed only slightly.

Should I do the clutch and flywheel as well (maybe get a ligher one)?

I will most likley have someone do it.

If anyone knows a mechanic locally in Muncie, IN or Indy send me a PM.

Any time you replace the clutch, you should at least have the OEM flywheel turned. Also, replace the throwout bearing, and main crankshaft seal while you're there. I didn't do the seal on my wife's camry, and within 20k miles, the SOB started leaking. The oil can get on your new clutch and kill its lifespan. The seal is under $30.

^ what he said

I wouldn't waste money on a lightened flywheel though, unless you're really looking at performance gains or want to in the future

Thanks for the heads up on the seal....I will do it for sure.

I will be doing the throw out bearing (comes with the clutch kit)

rear main seal is the one between transmission/clutch and engine.
also consider OEM toyota parts, it is the seal you don't want to be cheap on, it is very labor intense if it fail on you prematurely
i bought mine from dealer for $36,

another seal is the axle seal, around $7 from dealer each, while you have the axel out, good time to replace while you are there.

also inspect the axle boots.

They kind of both look the same size from the pics

Can you tell me if it is the one labeled front or rear?

the one labeled as rear.

the other one is the front seal, which goes behind the crank pulley

and I agree with bronzemaxell- do the axle seals while you're at it, especially the half-shaft seal, since that one is the hard one to do after the tranny is back in
