3rd Generation Fuel Filter?

I called my dealer to see how much it would cost to replace a fuel filter on my 94 camry since most mechanic shops near my place have been telling me some BS story about how my car has an imbeded fuel filter in my gas tank and the only way to clean it is to open up the tank and use a toothbrush to clean it. I didn't believe their BS cause obviously most cars around the mid-90's have a fuel filter so i called the dealer and they told me its going to be around
~130 to replace it. I know it has to be replaced since the previous owner of my car has done absolutely nothing to it. Is ~130 a resonable price or are they just being the usual dealer stealer? How much should replacing a fuel filter run me ?

There are two fuel filters. One is in the fuel tank which I think is nothing more than a thin mesh. There is another one under the hood near the air filter box. I've never touched the one in the tank, but the one near the air filter costs about $20 from Napa Autoparts and takes maybe 1 hour to change. $130ish sound reasonable for labor + parts to change the one under the hood. I don't know about the one by the fuel tank thoguh.

if the one under the hood hasnt been touched, it might be difficult to remove due to rust. oh wait, youre in texas - it shouldnt be too hard. just make sure to buy a decent set of flare nut wrenches if you decide to tackle this yourself!

im willing to bet if you hit a local mechanic they will charge about $80 for a new fuel filter installed. the one in the tank i wouldnt worry about. i took mine out when i replaced the fuel line and it still looked brand new after 130k miles and 12 years. that one is really only used to catch the large debris like when the fuel tank starts to rust through or someone drops something into the tank.

Is the engine running OK, not stumbling on acceleration, etc?

The filter rarely needs changing unless the engine is showing signs of fuel starvation due to a plugged filter (rare on Camry).

(these photos arent mine, but are just for reference)

location is just behind the air filter box and its attached to the side of the strut tower.

this photo isnt from a camry (it pouring rain here and i might melt) so i found a photo similar to what you will see. you will see the top of the black fuel filter with a banjo bolt. the feed line is from the bottom.

if you do work on this yourself, make sure you use TWO wrenches on the bottom fitting. the bottom nut will loosen and the top nut (both nuts on under the filter) to hold the filter. when you loosen the top banjo bolt, use a wrench on the top nut underneith the filter to hold the filter. dont assume the bracket will keep the filter from spinning when you wrench on it.

There are two copper washers above and below the banjo nut that need to go back in place.

They usually comes with a Toyota filter. Be careful of the inlet fitting, it can sometimes get tricky.
