3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm looking at some new pads at tire rack and thinking I might get the one with the highest stopping power rating. But my camry doesn't have ABS (no sight of physical ABS modulator supposed to be next to the coolant reservoir), so does this mean they are gonna be a bad combo?
I dont think any brake pad can have such power to stop IMMEDIATELY a rotating wheel at certain speed. Lockup only happen when the tire lose traction with surface street (rainny day).
If u still worry then just spill some oil on those pads, just kidding, lol.
How are your tires? My ABS used to kick in pretty quickly with my old OEM Bridgestone Potenza RE92 tires, and with my Michelin Pilot Exaltos, it just barely kicked in once. Even without ABS I'm sure the difference between crappy tires and good ones would be just as great. Good brakes and junk tires wouldn't make sense.

Be forewarned that brake pads with high stopping power can be much noisier.
Even the OEM Toyota Brake pads can stop the car pretty well.
Like others said, it's the tires.
+1 on OEM toyota pads. They work pretty good. Plus get a set of Brembo blanks and you'll be fine. If you are running drums in the rear, have them adjusted (if you have to pull your handbrake high to the sky get them adjusted) and you won't be pressing the brake as hard to get good stopping power.

better pads always help, but what I sometimes advise against on cars without abs, are SS brake lines....it makes the pedal so stiff that with good pads, it is not very hard to lock up the brakes and slide at all.

O good call, I'll remember that. Does your car have ABS? From what I remember from your accidents, wheels were always locked up?
no, I don't have abs...hence the "problem" that I encountered....driver's error really. it wasn't such a big issue when I was still auto...then I just had to remember to pump the brakes.
