4th Generation Rear disc brake backing plate/shield

How important is the metal plate/shield that goes behind the rear disc brake? My left one just broke off and I'm not sure whether it's worth replacing now, or if I should just wait until I need brake work anyways.

If it is important, can the plate be ordered/installed separately from a full caliper?

Thanks

The basic purpose of the backing plate or dust shield is to keep the dirt and grime from shooting all over your suspension. In my opinion if there is a lot of rain, snow, or salt on the roads you drive on yes its very usefull, not manditory but its a risk you would have to consiger. I would suggest going to a salvage yard to pick one up. A gen 3 or 4 will work. Just my 2 cents since I picked up a whole rear assemble when I swapped my drums to disks.

Thanks for the replies. Fortunately I didn't lose the shield, so perhaps it can be welded back on? The left rear strut is the only one I haven't had replaced yet, and it's starting to make a racket so perhaps I'll see about having the shield put back on when it comes time to change that strut.

Cheers!

"The left rear strut is the only one I haven't had replaced yet"

Struts should be replaced in pairs to avoid unusual handling characteristics.
