3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have just finished installing a CAI, Headers, and 2.25'' downpipe, highflow cat, 2.25'' cat back, magnaflow muffler. anyway...
where should i go from here? Im fully aware this car will never be "fast" i just love screwing with it, and I have the money to do so. Not interested in a turbo...any suggestions? Ported manifold, new throttle? not sure if there is even anything else to get...
I am about to Pn'P another 5SFE head. I will be sure to take lots of pics and post flow bench data. If you can wait a month or so this is what I would do next. That is, if your are a DIY kinda guy. There are also other DIY's on this process if you google it.
Thanks for the advice guys, I used to be a DIY guy, but unfortunately my father took all of his tools with him, he was a former mechanic, and im left with pretty much nothing.
I would love to get 17's ....any suggestions?
and i will definitely look into the suspension, if i cant make it faster a nicer ride would be great, good point. Any parts you guys recommend?

thanks a lot guys.
Lexus IS300 wheels or the 6 spoke wheels on the new Camry.
no point in making it fast, any performance mods i have interest in are for non-performance reasons (ie: intake for the sound, same with exhaust)
I have to say that I do not agree with this sort of sentiment in the least. For a while now I have been reading comments like this and I have to finally say that this is BS. I know I know. This is the part where 8-10 folks reply, "The 5SFE is an economy engine and a trash platform to build", or "Don't waste your money trying to make a Camry fast".... While I agree that this car does stand a better chance of ending up all-show no-go, especially with most mods consisting of ebay intakes and fart-cans, I think it is a shame that the 5S is so easily dismissed. No this engine will never pull like the 1MZ is capable of, and yes the cost of building a modest 5S usually ends up being prohibitive compared to a 1MZ swap, but never tell a guy that there is no point. If you want your 5S Camry to be a bit funner to drive, use this site and and its members experience. This may lead to you deciding to make the 1MZ swap. This may lead to you keeping the 5S and swapping in a 5-speed. Unfortunately this may lead to you adopting the same "there is no point" conclusion. No hard feelings here. I am not trying to piss off the Pope. Truth be told I have had fun with these 5SFE's and will be following the flock of 1MZ swappers myself. First I need to find out for myself just what the 5SFE is capable of.
LONG LIVE ALEX XYDIAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
go read my F22 thread ... obviously you have no idea where i stand on the matter
there is no need to find out what its capable of, we already know ... you can hit 300whp on a 5S-FE with a 5spd tranny safely, and people have been doing that for a couple years now ... you can hit 500whp on a 5SFE/3SGTE hybrid (aka: 5S-GTE) but not reliably
theres nothing new to be done, and bang-for-the-buck its pointless ... the OP doesnt sound like someone who is interested in throwing money away just to see what will happen, therefore spending money on "performance" mods that dont actually perform isnt a wise choice

Speaking of fast, damn men... Just earlier this afternoon I was entering the freeway, there was a mid 90 E-class behind me on next lane. There was like 100 feet before I get to the freeway and the %#$@^ started accelerating faster and faster. I was watching the thing the whole time through my mirror, I floored the gas immediately as hard as i can but u know ... >.<
Im not opposed to the whole gangster look, my brother loves that stuff, but I personally cant stand it, i prefer a stock look, thats why I didnt really want to go bigger than 17's. Im in no way insulting anyone who likes that, your car, do what makes you happy, long as your doing it for yourself then im down.
ohh u talking about rocking huge ass wheels that look stupid... i agree on that but ur wrong 18's dont make the car look stupid. First lowered the car first then get some wheels. Second 17's that come with a lip usually look smaller than they appear so it sucks imo.

The money it would take to get a 5s to produce those number would easily buy a decent mucle car that already makes those numbers stock. On top of that, a mucle car has more potential to make even bigger numbers.
I own a 65 Mustang, and I'm builing an engine(long block crate motor) that will easily make 400hp N/A on pump gas.
I was contemplating going turbo with the Cam, but after I bought my 'Stang and learned of all the aftermarket horse power goodies I could get for it. There was no contest. The Cam will be my daily driver car, and the 'Stang will be my fun car.
Bottom line, if you want to have a car that makes big numbers, get a car that was designed to make big numbers.
I'll continue to mod the Cam, but only to make it look as nice as possible w/o it being completely riced out.
