How to tell if Calf on Non Calf Exhaust

Hi Gang!!

I need to replace my front flex pipe on the my 99 Camry 4cyl. My car has spent it whole life in Pa but the placards under the hood indicate it was built to Calf emission standards. My car appears to have a front caty under the heat riser shield and a rear caty on the end of the flex pipe.

How do these exhaust system differ? Are they the same length with the Ca have a different caty??

Thanks

JimD

IIRC, cal spec has a precat like yours one before and one after the flex pipe. non cali spec just has a cat after the flexpipe. cali spec FTL

Thanks BigBird!

I get the picture.....but does the not CAL have a intermediate pipe that replaces the front cat so that the flex pipe (with rear cat) could be used for both versions of the car???

Thanks

na, the cat is welded in place as far as i know. not like the downstream cat. other problem is that you cant just cut it out cuz it will trip an O2 sensor code unless you put in a simulator or get a non cali spec ecu.

i've replaced my 97 4cyl cali emission camry flex pipe about a year ago with an aftermarket flex pipe $140 or $150 from egay. i am in PA aswell, but the vehicle was original sold to NY state, as far as i know, the flex pipe works with either cali and federal emission.

the difference is Cali has cat before the flex pipe, and uses Air fuel ratio sensor instead of oxygen sensor.
