driving with the HVAC on anything other than vent

does this cause the compressor to kick on? or does it burn more gas? I know on some cars, when you change the HVAC knob to a setting other than vent, the compressor kicks on.

For heat in defrost mode 'yes'. For AC cooling 'yes'. But I think 'no' for heat through vents and/or floor.

And yes it burns a tiny bit more gas. The compressor isn't always necessarily running though.

That is what the button 'A/C' is for, turn off the compressor, in any position.

Exatcly..if the a/c button is off, the compressor is NOT running.

And I dont know of ANY car that doesnt work like ours. Name one.
