If you're OBD2 go to Advance Auto, PepBoys, AutoZone, etc and they will pull the code for you for free.
If you're OBD1, get a Haynes manual, it will tell you how to pull the code. All you do with OBD1 is jump terminals T1 and TE1 on the diagnostics port, then turn the key to on, but don't start the engine. Then you count how many times the CEL flashes and look up the code in the table in the Haynes manual.

we can't help you without a code, otherwise the possible problems with your car are ALL the codes that can be thrown by the ecu. though, it does help now that we know it's obd1

Yep, just get a paper clip and jump those terminals. There are terminals under the hood and under the dash. Took me a while to find the right holes (go figure). Mine was throwing a 71 code, which is EGR valve. It's so intermittent, I'm not worrying about.
Now that I think about it, I haven't seen it since I cleaned my throttle body? Does that make sense?
To the OP, get your code and one of us can look it up.
I wonder if its an EVAP code. I know.....shot in the dark. Just for giggles check your gas cap seal. Or if you have an aftermarket cap make sure it seals. When you take the cap off when filling do you get the hissing?
