2000 Toyota Camry Blown Engine - worth fixing?

Surprise of surprises! 2000 Camry 170K miles, blown engine. Apparently threw a rod. Completely unexpected since we have 2 other Camrys with 270K+ on them. Bunch of questions - welcome suggestions.

1) Should I get an engine swap? Car has had no other problems up to now. Regular oil changes, no obvious sludge noticed by mechanic, transmission seems ok. (Although price of fix seems to be same or greater than worth of car)
2) If yes, should I go with remanufactured or from junk yard?

Thanks!

YES! I say fix it.

You should be able to find a good used engine with 100K or less on it.

Replace it. Reman or junkyard is all what your willing to spend. Either the I4 or V6 from the junkyard you can get under $700, which is WAY less then the value of the car.

so blue book value of my car is between $3000-$4500. the mechanic thinks it'll cost $3-4K to fix it, high end $5k. i priced some used engines that are available in the area and they range from $1600-2000 (with 70-100K miles). another mechanic said they would use a Jasper rebuild engine for $3600. do these prices seem reasonable? i'm also wondering if anyone has gotten an engine replaced and how much longer they were able to drive their car for.

Someone was selling an 1mzfe for $300 I don't think you should pay much more for a gen4 version of one.

Where in NY are you? shit, the junkyard engines are under $1k, and I can swap the damn enging myself in my garage in a week........All I'd need to do is buy a lift. And $5k to put a used one in is flat out robbery.

It's been a couple years since I worked in the mechanic shop, but I remember getting used engines with around 60k on them and a small warranty for around $600. I could do a 4-cyl. swap in some vehicles in a day, depending on whether or not I could leave the transaxle in place. I don't know what the owner charged the customer, but I'd be willing to bet it wasn't close to the quotes you are getting.

Yea, well that's New York for ya. $100 to weld a muffler, $250 to put in a flex pipe, $600 to install suspension, etc... And no pull apart, which makes junkyards pretty expensive..
