4th Generation TRD Lip Kit Questions

I just bought the 6 piece TRD lip kit (no spoiler) that came off a gen4 (97-99) Camry. I found a few threads that pointed out some fitment issues with the front/rear valences. I have several questions. The guy I bought the kit from said only the rear valences needed to be heat gunned during install, but I found one thread that said everything was a perfect fit except for the front valences. If this came off a gen4 and is being installed on a gen4.5, which valences need to be modded?

The kit came with no screws or instructions. I tried attaching the rear valence with the stock screw holding the black plastic piece and bumper together but there was a fitment issue here. The holes on the valence would not match up with the stock screws in the bumper. I also tried matching up the front valence and this would not screw in either. It will also have to be bent to conform to the shape of the front bumper but I don't think tape will be strong enough. How much drilling will I need to do if none of the valence holes are matching up with the stock screws? I know some sanding can be done but I was under the impression that only 2 of the 4 valences would need to be modded.

How should I go about attaching the pieces and what size and number of screws should I get? I counted 8 large screws and at least 4 smaller screws. Is it necessary to screw each side skirt in 4 times on both ends? I want to drill the least amount of holes as possible. I think I will be relying a lot on 3M double-sided tape as well.

Update:

If you look closely, you can tell that the rear valences don't match the shape of the bumper. I need to cut these in order for them to sit flush.

don't be afraid to drill. trust me, you're going to be thankful that you drilled it. 3M tape does not provide the 100% assurance that drilling does.

you will have to drill into some parts to secure the lip kit. the front wont sit flush, i have the same problem with the gracia bumper. i never did it but king posed a good solution. fill the space with a semi-solid calk, somthing sillicone based then sand and paint it. your other oprion is the hear the plastic and try to form it to the bumper.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like I'll be drilling this kit.

Bigbird, since you have the TRD lip kit on your car, how many holes did you have to drill for each valence? None of the pieces match up with the existing screws, so I just want to confirm that I'll be drilling new holes into the car, is that correct?

And PrincessPeach I sent you a PM.

keep in mind your 4.5 so youll have to force it to fit, so drilling and triming in necessary. I put this kit on a 4th gen and it was simple but a 4.5 but need some extra love.

Did you use screws to hold the pieces into place? I'm worried about the screws ripping or cracking the existing bumper since I was pulling pretty hard on the ends of each valence to get it to conform to the shape of the bumper better. They would screw into plastic that is fairly thin. I think there will be lots of stress which may cause problems later on. I was going to use nuts and bolts but there would be no way for me to tighten the nuts. Also, what's a good way of securing the valences into place? I couldn't find any strong double-sided tape and I think glue/liquid adhesives would damage the paint, although they do hold better.

I'm gonna drill everything but some parts need to be taped since the pieces need to bend/conform with the bumper. The parts that are not drilled will have gaps between the bumper and the valence. 3M only makes single-sided tape as far as I know so I guess I might have to resort to glue or some sort of caulking.

They definitely make double sided foam tape for automotive use. I have no idea where to find it as I've never tried to procure it. Napa does have a lot of unique stuff though. That nasty black gooey stuff that's used seal the plastic sheet in the door and the tail lights to prevent water penetration....yeah...I found that stuff at Napa. Unfortunately it came in a quantity that I've barely use 5% of it.

Anyhow here are 3M's automotive tapes:

You want either the Acrylic Foam or Acrylic Plus tapes. I have no idea what the difference is, but the Acrylic Foam tape has a lot more sizes to choose from.

3M makes a lot of good tape products, but you need to now what is adhering to what. Wrong tape for an application = problems.

[IE I have 3M tape for putting plexi onto glass. Other tapes = plexi falling and braking, this stuff? Good luck getting it off without braking the glass! but then again, it was $600/roll , but like I said, make sure you get the right one for the right application]

I'd agree with your thinking. I'd use the tape to position everything, but would definitely screw/drill it all in to place. Things like bodykits I'd not trust for tape alone to hold up over time by itself.
