GEN3 Car Won't Start--->Starter Motor??

Guys, need to confirm is the pix below with arrow pointed is the "starter motor"???
http://img148.imageshack.us/my.php?i...2008363pa9.jpg
My car won't start now...not sure whether its the starter motor or some another ignition problems !!!
Call the road assistant today and he was able to start the car using the following method.
Basically he disconnect the cable from the pix above and using a jumper wire he apply one end to the starter and in the another end he apply to the power from the battery in order to get the car to start again.
BUT once i turn off the engine i wont able to start the car normally unless i use the method that he apply.
Thanks for any help in advanced.

Derrick

Yeah thats the starter...but have u checked ur battery?....the 96 needed a new one this past weekend. Suddenly wouldn't fire up, after a coffee and piss stop, but thank God I was rolling to a meet with Adam (ASG14) and he had jumper cables.

His first thought too was the starter, but sure enough, the battery had lost it last cell!

I will check the battery with a multimeter tomorrow morning .
How do you take off the starter motor...by removing the 2 mounting bolts...are they the same as the 4 Cylinder engine ???

Using a multimeter to test the battery will tell you voltage but will not put the battery under load. You need to take this somewhere that can put a load on your battery to get an accurate idea of its condition.

Are the lights coming on when you turn the key on? Was the starter trying to turn the car over? Does it make any sound?

If the tow truck driver was able to by-pass the ignition switch to start the car, it means the battery is good; if the battery is bad, using a jumper cable/wire you still won't be able to start the car. You could either have a bad starter relay or a bad ignition switch.

N.E.O.

My lights worked, as did the radio, interior lights, key buzzer...but the battery just didn't have enought juice to turn the motor over. Just get the battery tested before u start spending big bucks throwing parts at it.

Been there done that!

Have taken out the starter motor and test it and it look O.K.
Bad Ignition Switch...how do i test them ???
I noticed my alarm is no longer working, would that cause the car not to start ???

Ah! You have an alarm system on your car, which makes things a little different, because some of the alarm system do disable the starter. Do you happen to know what kind it is?

If you are not sure what kind it is, or what is wrong with the alarm system, just take the whole thing out. Some of the wiring for the ignition switch might have been spliced in with the alarm system underneath the dash.

N.E.O.

I disconnect the module and try to restarting the car and still not working.
Would taking the power off from the battery help ???

Disconnecting the module itself may not work if the wiring had been spliced for the module. Check the wiring under the dash to the ignition switch, see if there is any wire that had been cut. If there are, reconnect them and see if that solve the starting problem, it usually is only two to three pairs of wires.

How did you test the starter?

How old is the battery? (if it's four or five years or older, just replace it) If the battery is newer, go ahead and clean the terminal with a terminal cleaner (about US$2 at a parts store). If the clamps are in bad shape, replace them (about US$15 for the positive terminal clamp, the negative terminal clamp comes with the wire, about US$30 if I remember right).

Does your car have cruise control? (not relevant to your question, I was just wondering if the V6 engines have it in a different location, on the I4 it would be to the left of the battery if you are looking at the engine from the front of the car)

No cruise control on my Gen 3.
