3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I noticed that my Camry is knocking or pinging sound on the engine..Current mileage is 280k km. Spark plug is new, engine oil is new, ATF is new, Filter is new, clean throttle body but still can hear the knocking sound..Check with timing light with Te1 and E1 short and timing fluctuate in between 10-12 degree...
Sorry, forget to mention about the load..I will normally heard this when I accelerate...ie..kick down from 4th gear to third gear etc..Besides that, it seems to ping even as low as 1.5k rpm or as high as 4.5k rpm..
The loudest will be when i drive it slow at final gear and trying to shift down to third gear while going slight uphill...
Have you try using higher octane fuel to see if the condition improves? You car is equiped with a knock sensor, which is designed to minimize pinging underload.
Yeap, tried using higher octance fuel..Previously using Ron 92 and then switch to Ron 97. Ping is still there but improves a little bit..However, the knocking is still there...
It normally will have the knocking sound when I press the accelerator and will goes off once I release my paddle...I notmally do short trips and have not been driving the car daily as usual coz I got my new car...So, will drive once or twice in a week...Short trips of 8-10 kms..
JCamry94,
I have no seaform my 5SFE b4..By the way, my motor mount is not in real good condition..I can feel quite some vibration when the gear is in D when I applied brake to idle...Idling is good at 750-800rpm..By the way, how can the motor mount affect the knocking sound???
When you do short trips, the engine doesn't get the chance of fully warmed up, which increase the chances of carbon deposit inside your engine. Sometime it would help just by taking your car out and drive it; drive it meaning allowing it to fully warm up with some heavy acceleration, blow out some of the deposit in the combustion chamber. And runs some Seafoam through the engine as JCamry94 has recommended. Too gentle on your car sometimes may not be good.
U mean the carbon build-up in combustion chamber? I normally will warm up my car about 5 mins and then drive to office..While on the way to office, I will speed it quite hard..Sometimes up to 4k rpm..Not a gentle driver...kekekkekekekekekekekekekke
