Power Solutions

Well its time to look at some real power alternatives for my camry. Forget the whole turbo 5sfe, I need more power than a turbo 5s could ever give me. Although there is one interesting piece of information I acquired about turboing a 5sfe. I spoke to a turbonetics rep. and he said that he had a customer with a 97 5sfe camry that took the turbonetics scion tc turbo kit and adapted it to his 5s without any major problems.

But as for my power alternatives. I'm researching either a 1mzfe swap w/ a custom turbo kit or a 3sgte swap. Now those engines aren't all that satisfying for me. After you turbo the 1mzfe you still got below 240 crank hp, right? The 3sgte from a 94-99 celica gt has around 230 crank hp. Plus the 3sgte has much more aftermarket support than the 1mzfe or 5sfe. So I will probably go with the 3sgte and swap in a manual transmission.

I was also thinking, would the Scion tc 2azfe motor fit in the gen 4 camry? There shouldn't be an fitment issues with the motor, the engine bay of a gen 4 camry is pretty spacious. Yet there might be issues with the fitment of the tc tranny. The good thing about the tc engine is it has a lot of aftermarket support, a trd supercharger and a turbonetics turbo kit to name a few. So what do you think? I would buy a civic and swap a b18c1 into it but everyone and there mother has done it. It would be priceless to have a camry that could outrun a mustang gt in the 1/4 mile.

hmm

The third gen 3SGTE makes 265HP bone stock. With a relatively low $ input you can get into the 300's with this engine. With a lot of $ the sky is nearly the limit. At that point it all comes down to how reliable you want the engine to be. IMO the 3SGTE swap is the best swap to make. Mainly because output can be increased a little at a time as money comes. Not to mention the bragging factor. Also lighter than a 1MZ if you care about such things. It is a good foundation to build on. The 3rd gens are not cheap, but i think it would be worth it. Of course there are a lot of other expenses involved in such a swap. Custom mounts alone are gonna run you quite a bit unless you fab them yourself.......I am not sure about the 2azfe. But I can tell you that for the most part 1mz and 3SGTE are the best options. Also "everyone and their mother" has made the 1MZ swap. 3SGTE Camry's are rare as s**t.

3S-GTE swap if you say a 5S-FTE cant give you enough power

how much power do you really want out of your camry anyways?

id say the 3sgte or 1mz would be easier just because someone has done it already. the 2az...youd be on your own with that. but forget about the weight factor, from what ive read the 3sgte is just about the same weight as the 1mz sicne the imz ian an all aliminium motor. the 3sgte would be the easiest to get power from though.

1mz I think is lighter but that's because you not counting the extra weight you would put when putting on the turbo and related stuff on the 1mz then I would think the 1mz with the custom turbo and everything would weigh more than the 3sgte!!!

Just go with the 3sgte...reason being is that better off going thru the headache of installing a 3sgte and that's it after that is done you got an aftermarket support for the motor to make extra power.

The 1mz you would have to deal with the headache of installing it and hoping you got everything for the swap but after that you would be stuck in trying to do everything custom to make power out of that motor.

I say deal with trying to swap a 3sgte into the camry and enjoy the benefits of a reliable turbocharged motor with an aftermarket support for it while being very unique because a 3sgte camry is rare!!!

If you want to turbo a V6 then don't bother wasting time swapping in a V6 just sell your camry and get a V6 camry to begin with even better one that comes with the 5-speed manual!!!

I'd be happy with a minimum of 250 crank. I'm probably going to go with the 3sgte, do you think I should buy a jdm 3sgte or a domestic one. I've been searching for 3sgte's for sale and I've found more jdm ones than domestic ones, like on this site for example: http://www.jdmenginescorp.com/engine...eed-lsd-swap--

5S-FTE can hit 250 at the wheels, so if you want 250 crank then i would say its definitely an option ...

but i agree, the 3S-GTE is the smartest choice because not only does it come as a factory turbo engine, but its got a great aftermarket whereas the 5S-FE or 1MZ-FE require 99% custom work
