3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So I searched this forum but found nothing. Has anyone here done this job? Is it a total PITA?? I need to do this soon, but am unsure about how to go about it. So who has had this pleasure?
There's no "T" in 5sfe. Not sure, but it might help your search results. A mechanic told me it wasn't even worth doing.....in other words it's a pain in the ass for very little gain.

I'm the biggest boss thatchu seen thus far! Baby, that's muh wi'zzard!
It is actually pretty simple, but there are a couple different ways you can do them. You can do it inside the car without removing the head, or you can remove the head and do it on the bench. It pretty much depend on what shape your engine is in; if there are oil leaks everywhere, around the head gasket and what not, removing the head would be the way to go. Otherwise, replacing the seals in the car will cost less.
Why do you need to do that soon?

Reason: Bad Bad English
Is the engine smoking at cold start up and getting worse? A valve stem seal replacement can stop this.
The post is for a V6 but will give you an idea of what is involved. Shop around for stem seals, the Supra seals should fit and can be purchased from performance websites outlets for around $40 a complete set.
If going this route plan on spending a long weekend doing the job
The alternative is to remove the head which typically costs the price of at a head gasket set.

Thanks for the reply. I get a puff of blue smoke just at start up every 1-2 days. I guess I just dont want it to get worse ya know. I just passed smog 2 months ago with flying colors though.

Crikey mate, sounds a bit too involved for my novice a$$! Thank you for your response though, I really do appreciate it.
I get a small puff of blue smoke just at start up only like once every two days. In fact I passed smog 2 months ago no problem.
I was just checking with you guys to see if I should address this immediately or not. Is there an additive that can swell up those rubber seals?
Anything to do with the Valves are a PITA...I had to do headwork on a tercel that was spewing blue smoke out the exhaust. suprise suprise it wasnt a bad seal but the valve itself... it looked like pacman lol.

I doubt that you are up to that point if it is still running good, and just a little bit of smoke in the morning. The engine would be running rough too if the valves are bad.
You might have to keep track of your oil level for a little bit of time before you can determine if you are using oil or not. You can check it every fill up to see if there is any change to the level.

Yeah, she runs great. A lot of power, pick up, and idles perfect. Just the lil puff.... I hope you are right. I hope that its just the seals.
I will check the oil levels regularly from now on.
Do a compression and a leak down test, it will give you some idea to what the condition of your engine is in.
Oh, I read a thread somewhere saying the Castrol oil for high mileage car would help in similar situation like yours; however, I haven't try it so don't know if it is true or not. But the way I see it, I will need to change oil on my car anyway, I might just give that a try and see how it goes.

I checked oil levels today. My motor is still right on the full mark and i changed the oil 1000 miles ago. Do you think I am just burning a tiny bit of oil or do you think I need to take a closer look at the colour of smoke coming out of the tailpipe?
It is possible, but either way, it doesn't seem like the engine would require any immediate attention from you. Just keep an eye on it and do the tests, it would help you plan if you do decide to make repair. And anything less than 1 qt of oil consumption is general acceptable for engine with some miles on it by Toyota or any other manufacturers' standard.
