3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
i just installed my custom-made headers and after driving the car for a couple of hours, the check engine light went on
i preveously removed the catalytic converter a month earlier and there were no problems...
i saw something that looks like a small pipe coming out of the back manifold, i'm not sure if the new headers have that same pipe or not, but i'm sure that the oxygen sensors are properly fit...
the oxygen sensor is properly fit i'm sure of it, but there's this pipe that's originally in the back manifold, i'm not sure if they made a similer one in the new headers cause it's hard to see
get the code read and then we can really help instead of guess
as for that pipe that was on the back of the rear header...that would be for the egr...
where did you get your headers? are they the new OBX ones that are on ebay? how's the fitment?
i got them custom made... fitment is crappy, i had to go back because of a leak in a gasket
the small pipe was cancelled in the headers, could that be the problem? also, i noticed that the oxygen sensors are placed each in a single pipe before the collector, meaning that the sensor only reads the emmesions of only one cylinder... could that be the problem?
and yes...unfortunately, those could all be problems.
the o2 bungs should be on the collectors so that it can get full readings from the entire bank, but that most likely won't throw a code, it just isn't good for the ecu tuning.
more than likely, you're throwing an egr code if you no longer have an egr setup with your new headers

ok looks like i'm goingto have to go back... but what does egr stand for?
It stands for exhaust gas recirculation...hmmm how to put this. Its basically re-routes gasses harmful to the enviorment like nitrogen oxide back to the intake so that its not released into the atmosphere.

thanks for the info... what happened is that they cancelled it from the headers and blocked the flang, you think this's what caused the check engine light?
It keeps your combustion temperature down by re-using the inert gas from the exhaust back through the combustion chamber. Also helps with your NOx emissions.
