3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a rattle emitting from the Camry. It's getting irritating now, and I've tried everything to locate where the noise is coming from, but haven't found it yet. Basically, when I hit 2100 to 2400 rpm, there's a distinct "metal-to-metal" vibration-like sound. When I open all the windows and rev it in the garage, it sounds like the sound is coming from the middle-right underneath the car.
I suspect that it might be something inside the muffler of the exhaust that came loose, though I'm not certain. Is there any way to check without dismantling the whole thing?
Has anyone else experienced such a problem before? It's been bugging me for just over a year now, and I've finally snapped. I need to make it stop!!!
Just for additional information, it's a 200i '96 gen3.
Jack your car up and get underneath and check all your heat shields and hangars... the rubber bushings could have desintigrated over time and maybe that's causing your issue.

Had a look at the shield plates, and they all seem in tact. Nothing vibrating against the exhaust or the body. They're all firmly in place. The rubbers do seem to be somewhat worn, so I will replace them and see if this eases the problem.
Like someone said, get a rubber mallet and gently hit the CAT, down pipe from exhaust manifold, and also the muffler itself. Usually you will hear a ring or metal shavings rattle inside which will indicate a failing part.
btw, it was the heat shield at first for me, then the end of the flexpipe which had a small shield. Check that one!

I have the exact same issue however I wanted to clarify your issue. So you are noticing this problem while you are in park or neutral and while you are in the garage? Does this problem occur during drive under light acceleration?
My issue is the exact same except I don't get the problem (metal ratelling) to occur in Park or Nuetral, it's only in light accleration during load...it's also when the engine is in normal working conditions (hot).
Thanks!

Exactly the same. Only when the engine is at running temp. The harder I accelerate, the more clear the sound is. When it's parked, I can hear the sound, though not as distinctly as when the car is actually moving. (Driving)
So have you replaced any heat shields or anything exhaust related? My theory on our problems is that it looks like when the engine is under load, it causes a vibration on a hot piece of metal (the CAT or the heat shields that expand with heat) and cuases a natural frequency in which they will tend to vibrate more easily...
What have you done so far to deal with this issue?
Good thing I found this thread... I'm also experiencing this annoying problem and it got worse after i replaced the transmission and all the engine and trans mount??? The other day coming out of car wash the car felt like it was dragging something underneath looked down and didn't really see anything after i got out of the special floor from the car wash and went to the street and looked down.
So it's either the flexpipe area or something around there i guess, i have a 2.5" exhaust piping there with no cat just a resonator close to the cat area can't see anything while on the street.

im also glad i found this thread..
im still running the stock pipe..
i get the problem of when i rev high and let go of the acc i hear this rattling noise for a sec in the pipe... it sounds as if a bracket or something is loose...
there are quite a number of weilding spots on the pipe.. can that be the reason or the pipe being too restricted????
also it could simply be virbrating...
can anyone help me with this???
please
uhm,
toyota corona '89
originally comes with a 3s-f
swapped for a 5s-fe with stand alone ecu and later fitting a turbo..
at the mo im running on stock downpipe....
ok, when i free rev hard to the redline and i let go of the accelerator i hear a rattling noise as the rev goes down until it reaches about 4500rpm...
i fitted a muffler and the same thing happened...
what could that be???
will it happen when i enlarge my downpipe???
