Could the outlet be wired backwards? I hardwired an expansion pod and did it backwards and ended up frying the one for my garmin.
Are any fuses blowing at all? Is there metal or something in the socket that shouldn't be there?

Not sure if there's an actual test, but the easiest way is if you have a 12v LED. They're polarity sensitive so you can easily figure out what side is supposed to be positive and which ground. Compare what you find to what the FSM says and you'll be able to tell if it is wired right. It SHOULD be but if somewhere down the road someone bastardized something it could have gotten mixed around.

Have you had any problems with plugging anything else into it?

12 volt dc will work either way (for certain things) lights, speakers, cigarette lighters... they are on or off and in that case either way you feed it power it will work.

i dont remember right now but i think the bottom or back of the plug should be hot, the sides should be ground or negative....so you might try using an led as someone else said with some long wires...

Exactly. Most things you'll use aren't specific which is positive and which isn't, but somethings are, and are sensitive so when put in the wrong way get fried, which I did with flying colours!
Using an LED is the easiest way to find out how it's wired. They won't blow. Either it'll work or it won't depending which way the positive is.

Now on a 12v power outlet I can't remember which is supposed to be the ground. I think it's the outside and the pin is the positive which is fused, but could be wrong.
