I suspect a vacuum leak somewhere and I scanned it and it's EGR related but the EGR is good. There are TWO SMALL HOSES going DOWN from the EGR (and the similar shaped sensor? Unit? next to it) covered by a loose foam insulating hose. These hoses appear to go to the REAR of the engine, way down, and I suspect they are corroded and need to be replaced, they are 11 year old original hoses. WHERE do these hoses go? I am unable to get to them without jacking the car up or putting it on a lift. Thanks.
It is bolted to the block underneath the intake manifold right above the rear engine mount. You can't really see it, even if you look from under the car, maybe from the right front wheel well. What code do you have?
I am guessing from your description that you have a four cylinder, right?
N.E.O.

It is a tight fit, don't usually have to mess with it, unfortunately, the VSV do have problem sticking, either on or off. If you are getting a P0401 or P0402, and everything checks good, there is a very good chance that the VSV is intermittently sticking. If it is your own car, you can always relocate it somewhere else; just disconnect it and unhook the hoses, and mount it elsewhere that is more accessible.
BTW, are you getting a code for the EGR or are you just hearing the noise?
Hi, the smaller diameter vacuum hose that is everywhere in my car is NOT available from the usual auto supply places- It is metric vacuum hose! What aftermarket has this exact fit? Do I have to buy it from toyota for $50 a foot or what? Their prices are so ridiculous.............. Also is the VSV available aftermarket or WHAT?
The hose that you purchase from Toyota maybe exactly the same as the one you have on the car right now, with foam cover and all. As far as the hose is concern, it is just 3/16" vacuum hoses which you can purchase from any parts store. On thing though, the vacuum hoses on your car right now is pretty good quality, unless it is soaked with chemical or oil, they probably won't cause any problem for you. The VSV you will have to purchase it from Toyota, as far as I know.
If you want to you can test the circuit yourself if you have a vacuum pump available.
97 Camry 4CYL. OK. I am under the car and it is not possible to remove /access the VSV support bracket. The axle is in the way, the edge of the transmission and supporting strut, exhaust pipes, plus it's behind a huge engine mount (WHY did they locate this here?) Impossible, I can barely touch the bolt securing it by pretzeling my arm in agony. HOWEVER I do SEE it through the wheel well. OK, I need to know from those that have removed this the EXACT access methodology required. I did however tighten up lots and lots of LOOSE oil pan bolts. WHEW!
