egr... would it make a difference?

i had my headers custom-made, the egr flang was cancelled, that's why the check engine light turned on (which is annoing), so now i must decide if i want to have the egr flang done again or not.
the thing is, i wanna know if this will affect my car in terms of performance. i understand that the egr is supposed to use some gasses from the exhaust through the intake which theoretically means weaker combustion...

so do you guys think that making the egr flang will affect my car's performance or not?

i drive a 2000 camry v6 manual trans.

thanks

The point of EGR is to recirculate exhaust gas into your intake to dilute the combustion mixture and suppress the combustion temperatures. High combustion temperatures result in NOx and pre-ignition, so without EGR, you'll have a greater tendency to ping and your NOx emissions will go through the roof.

I am pretty sure that the EGR is there for emission purposes only and actually hinders performance. But, due to it not operating, I don't know what the ecu will do as far as correcting for it not working .....

i'm thinking about having egr added back to my system, because the car reeks of unburned fuel after a drive. my wife tells me i smell like exhaust, and i can smell it on my jacket when i take it off. granted, having no cat greatly contributes to it, but having a functional EGR system would also lower my exhaust temp while cruising on the highway. I mean really... running hard it goes up to like 850-900 C... but just cruising at a steady 65-70 mph it's about 600-650 C. at idle once it's warmed up, it might be above 300. maybe.

i say yes, add the egr. if it's functioning properly, it should be closed when you're at WOT, and will snap open when you close the throttle to help cool things down and burn that unburned stuff in your exhaust. plus it has the added effect of fixing the check engine light, and making it easier to pass smog when it comes time for that. oh yeah... and that whole LEGAL thing....
