Two points. The first is pretty easy, the brake light comes on when you get low on brake fluid. Check your brake reservoir fluid level. It is probably low.
The second point is more drawn out. I am guessing that the noise is due to overly thin (maybe even dangerously thin) brake pads. I come to that because of the two symptoms together and a personal experience. As the brake pads wear thin it takes more fluid to engage them. This drops the level of the fluid in the reservoir and the brake indicator light comes on. In my case I didn't realize this and I kept adding brake fluid (to get the light to go off) and didn't check my pads. One day when making a turn and braking at the same time the pads on my right side fell out and I lost my brakes entirely. I was extremely lucky that there was no one else in the intersection and that I could coast to a stop. Kind of scary.
Anyhow, check your brake pad thickness all around. It isn't difficult to do yourself.
It would also be helpful to know what model year the car is, how many miles it has and what brake service you have had done to it.
