Well, I lucked out on a front bumper so will be replacing it for my pitted POS. I was searching for a how too to see what's involved, as I've not done one before but the link that came up says I don't have permission to access it?
As well, I was thinking of putting my taurus lip on before the bumper goes on for practical reasons. Is this a good idea, or will it cause me issues in doing so? Just trying to make the swap go as smooth as possible.
I can't see the link but do put on the taurus lip first, fastened it all the way down. Here's a word of advice, the ends of the lip should line up to the ends of the bumper, then make sure it's centered, if you know what I mean for the best look. Good luck.
As it sits, the one I put on the existing bumper was a real pita to do, which is why I was thinking it would be a hell of a lot easier to have it assembled before the bumper goes on. As for centering, that's the easy part. The only concern I'd see as being an issue is if putting it on would change the curve of the bumper somehow so it wouldn't fit right when it went on.
As for the actual taking off/putting on of the bumper, I've not done yet [the one the bumper came off of wasn't done right and looks like it was a replacement after an accident] but it looks fairly straight forward from what I can tell with bolts, retaining peices, and some brackets. Now, how rusted the bolts are in getting off what I need? That's a different story.
Wish I could say it was getting a nice RMM lip, but that's a ways off to happening at this point. Other things will have to be addressed of more importance, but changing the bumper will be 110% improvement over the one on it now.
Was taking a look at it tonight. With the 17" rims on it, between the back tire and edge of the wheel well, it's about 1, maybe 1.5 fingers between on stock springs, which is no wonder I rub a bit. From what I can tell on here, my back springs must be pretty sagged out, so it'll be new springs this spring I think if I can find a good deal on some. The list ever grows!
Thanks for the replies. Got the lip painted and bolted it up to the bumper. Now to just get a few hours to take off my old one and do the switch. Just hoping I don't get any broken bolts
You will need too start by removing the plastic belly pan under engine, headlight assemblies, grille, lower bumber support rods at each lower rear corner of bumper. Remove the upper and lower bumper steel reinforcement strips. These strip are black in color and are secured to the bumper with plastic push pins. After those items removed, remove front wheels and install jackstands. Remove plastic inner wheel wells on both sides. From inside the wheel well, you will have 4 bolts on each side That attach the bumper to the front fender to remove. Two are very far forward that will require 10 mm socket and extensions. The other two (one arranged up/down and the other arranged inside/outside. Of course make sure your bumper lights are disconnected. You are ready to remove the bumper.
Thanks. The plan is to do this on the weekend. My biggest worry is that the bolts on the metal brackets will not come out. Maybe I'll luck out, but we'll see. PB blaster may come in handy to give them a good coaxing.
Thanks everyone for the help. Got the bumper changed out today.
As I suspected, it wasn't the original and was changed out at some point. This being said, it was a bit easier to take off, but as well, one support bracket wasn't attached and the other was twisted.
Luckily I got extra brackets my last trip to the wreckers. Once actually came off easily, the other I had to drill out the bolt and put in a new one. Went fairly smoothly for the most part. Hardest part was putting my fogs back on as there isn't much room for my hand to get the nut on.
Colour match is fairly close. Seems a wee bit darker, but nothing too noticeable, but makes the car look 100x better than it did with the pitted/cracked paint I had on it. Belly pan and drivers side inner wheel shroud is next on the replacement list when I can get a good one at the wreckers. Mine seem to have seen better days.
