3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The spring on the gas tank door flap on my 1999 Camry has died. Right now I just jam something under the latch and then pry open the door, which works fine, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how they solved it.....
They sell foam weather stripping (sticky on one side) for windows and air conditioners. I've always thought that it would be possible to stick a 1' piece or so on the gas door so when you shut it the foam would compress on the spot where the spring used to be. I'm not sure how well this would work but it should. They make a 1"x1"x4' air conditioning weather strip that a small 1"x1"x1" cube might work real well.

When I went into the dealership and asked for the spring, the guys at the counter knew immediately what I was talking about, referred to it as "The Devil Spring," and, sure enough, it cost exactly $6.66.
