Gen 3 shifting weird

Hello I've searched, but did not find the solution,

1993 Camry v6, with around 155,000 miles, auto trans.

Just recently my car has been shifting funny, for example I'm on the highway, going around75-80mph at nearly 3k rpm, then all of a sudden it down shifts gears and then its shoots up to 4k rpm at 80ish, but the thing is, the car seems confused of what gear it should be in so it shifts up again, and then down shifts then up shifts. This occurs at almost all shift point in between gears. If you dont get it, just pretend you are driving normally, and you know when your car usually shifts down, imagine you are at that point and you keep your foot steady at that stage, now the problem is that car doesn't know what gear it should stay in. Please assist, because I'm not sure what it is, or what to check for. Thanks.

did you try checking your kick-down cable that's attached to the tranny?

ill check once i get out of work. I adjusted it early this summer, i'm not sure how tight it should be. Either way, does it sound like an actual tranny problem? I'm not sure what a bad auto transmission would do if its going bad, which is why I'm curious.

There are too many symptoms to list that a tranny can have if it its "Going Bad". In most cases the trans will slip, RPM goes up car does not accelerate. Sometimes the trans will not go into over-drive or will not shift past 1st or second etc. Gear box mechanical damage, a lot of grinding, gear whine etc. None of these symptoms equate to a tranny going "bad". Just needs work. I think gear box damage would be the worst case scenario for a bad trans. I think Eye8pussies got it right with the kick-down. No offense but, the fact that you had adjusted the cable enforces the opinion.

stupid question right here but i have to ask, will improper gapping of spark plugs cause this problem? I recently changed my plugs and considering my plugs are gapped at .035 for nitrous safety, would that affect it. my answer would be no to my question, but my knowledge is limited by the information i read online, credible or not, which is why i turned to you guys. i will definately check the kick down cable, if not ill check the trans fluid, btw I never changed the trans fluid ever since i owned this car.

this may affect engine prformance or shift timing; but it should not allow transmission to drop down one gear while cruising.

it was the O/D button, I noticed the O/D light flicker on and off while driving, so basically it was the wires touching each other because of the vibration of the car. And do i really have to change tranny fluid? Not to sound like a noob or anything, but my friend, who is a mechanic said don't change it because of something, he gave a reason but i forgot what it was, so i was like okay i wont change it. and so far, i haven't had any tranny problem and i run nitrous through the shifts.

Did the mechanic states something like: If you change the fluid now it was cause problems, or the old fluid has grit in it that helps the clutch plates grip and the new fluid will not, or changing the fluid will allow all the old debris to break loose and cause problems?

The issue is changing the fluid may or may not cause problems (not talking about a flush) but leaving the old fluid in will sooner or later cause trans failure.

He must have said something like, new fluid will destroy the trans, or it will make the trans leak, right? Your friend is a fool. How long has he been a mechanic? My friend, also a mechanic, has been in the game for 40 years. He has never once told anyone not to change the fluid in an old trans. Change that fluid A.S.A.P.

Yeah right, I see u got a good friend right there, he sure will take care of you well next time u call him for a tow because the tranny fucked up.

My dad used tell me the same thing: "dont change the fluid, just make sure it's full". He drives a ford, and obviously read them off the mannual. No wonder most american cars never made it through 5 years.
