3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
hey wassup ladies and gents...im stopping by to get input from true camry enthusiasts...i was at a cross road of buying a new car recently but after talking to my dad i decided to take out a 2500-3000 buck loan and use it strictly for my 4cyl camry......i see it being spent like this
i have dings all around the car....i was qouted for 1200 to fix and repaint car
i have an alpine type-r 12in in the trunk now and alpine type-r 6x9s and 6.5s running all off one amp.....so new amps and wiring is a must...im shooting for nothing over $400-600(becasue my car got broken into and they stole my radio)....i want to get Beyman 6.5 Comp. speakers for the front doors and get a shop i know to do custom cut outs for the back doors and put the alpine 6.5s back there(i was qouted for about 75 bucks for the cutouts)....and finally get another type-r sub and a custom box for them both.....
next get a set of used 17in rims....nuffin major....im riding on hub caps now so any rim will make me happy lol...local craigslist can get me a great set for 500-700
finally my car is running lean and i need a o2 sensor....which shouldnt be no more then 100-200
and whatever remains i will just use for minor things...(mats,reverse gauges etc...)
i just figured this may be smarter then taking out a 10k loan
also keep in mind 2 years ago i got a new used motor and a rebuilt trans....so im in the low 90's as far as milege....
just drop your opinion...or ideas or where to find these items....appreciate it folks
Sounds like you're off to a good start. I would suggest though if you're going to paint the car, and you're thinking of putting on a front lip, side skirts, or the like, to maybe get that done before you paint it so it can all be done at the same time.
Plus you dont even have the money do this. Its all a loan. With the economy the way it is, your better off not trying to get into debt. Plus i personally believe if you dont have the money to spend on your car, dont. I've know a few people who take out loans to mod their cars and just end up selling the cars because they cant afford them.

v6 camry guys dislike i4 guys like me, when it come sto modifing the engine...i personally would want a v6 since there is a supercharger for it, slap it on adn call it a day. But your looking fine as is right now and how you plan on spending the money. If you do have soem extra cash, do suspension work!

as far as selling it to get a v6.....naw no thanks...i understand your thirst for power...but selling then finding a v6, then supercharging and performing all kinds of engine and exhaust work would run way above 3000 imo.....
my car is paid off....so no note is the way i wanna keep it.....
and as far as not doing it at all cause of the economy....well not to brag or sound snobby....but i just hit 23yr old this year....and im a college guy who lives at home with my parents....im actually trying to buy a home as we speak to rent out...i have decided im not going no where until im 25...but in the mean time, im gonna buy and rent out as many properties as i can...
i know folks gonna jump at the chance to roast me cuz im doing this but...it doesnt make logical sense to me to move out and take on hella bills all because you wanna be independent...i rather be smart and strategic then a rebel....
i think its a great plan. i see no where in there plans to turbo or nitrus or big 20s...which is a good thing. id say get the car to run correctly, keep it running good and possibly get some better wheels.
no need to go turbo atm like bigbird said. Im taking it slow even though im dying to hit boost. I've been thinking about going turbo for three years now, and decided to go turbo this summer. BUt i still dont have any of the critical parts, and seeing how my engine is goign i thinking is goign to be needing a rebuild beofre going down the turbo path. but keep it nice and simple. Like you said you wanna paint the car adn get all the dings otu of it, before you do look around and see if you can get the trd lip kit for it it will can the car dramatically

Your first mistake is taking a loan because now you have to pay an extra 5-10% back to the bank of money I'm willing to guess you didn't have in the first place.
Personally, you need to a think about what YOU want done (engine or exterior or suspension or audio, etc.) and go that direction.
The Gen 4 looks great stock. Do what you listed: the sound system, rims and the paint job. Keep the left over money for maintenance: wax, soap, wheel polish, sea foam, vacuum cleaner, leather/upholstery cleaner, car jack, tool set, etc
