'93 A/C Compressor

Hi Guys. First of all, I am not a car parts person, but I am determined to fix my a/c. As of the moment, I have a '93 Toyota Camry LE. I took my car to this guy who was supposed to fix it for me, but the favor did not work out on my end. So I was not able to get it fixed. As far as I know, he said I need to replace the "low side a/c compressor". He did not tell me how much it was going to cost, nor where to find a good place to buy one. All he did was put dyed freon in it to see if it was leaking, and that's what he told me.

Because of his wording, I don't know if there's more than one compressor and I don't know where to look to find it. Can someone tell me where I can locate it as well as take apart and replace?

Is there anything else I should check for when fixing the a/c?

-Much appreciated!!

Well, the first thing you need to do is tell us what is wrong with your A/C system. The compressor itself is a single unit that draws in low pressure refrigerant and compress it to increase the pressure, and generally, it is replaced as a single unit, no high side or low side separately.

As far as I know, it's never worked since I got it (3 years ago?). It was used. I took it to my dad's friend's shop before, and he did the same as the recent guy did. He pumped in freon and told me to come back in a week. So I did. The a/c worked fine. On the lowest setting it's SUPER cold. Eventually, it would die down. It would only work when I was on the highway. I figured that it was because it pumps the a/c better when it is on the highway. After a while it would stop working completely (hence the leak). He wasn't clear with the specifics on what was wrong with the a/c.

So recently, my mom's friend has a friend that works with a Nissan dealership (he knows what he's doing). He didn't really help much but point out that it's the a/c compressor that's leaking. Same thing happened when he pumped freon into it. It would work fine for a week, then only highway, then it stops working completely.

Have your Mom's friend put some A/C dye in it with the refrigerant so he can tell where it is leaking from. When he finds the leak then you can have it fix. No one can really help you unless you know what exactly is leaking in the system. So far all you have said that it is leaking but you don't seem to know where it is leaking from. That will be the first thing you need to do, find out what is leaking.

Your mom's friend of friend from the dealership has already told you it is the a/c compressor itself (I assume the shaft seals) that is leaking, has he not?! What else do you want people to say or do here? You need a new compressor or you need to replace the seals on yours which is not for someone inexperienced like yourself. The system needs to be evacuated, flushed, compressor removed, serviced or replaced, then re-installed, re-evacuated and recharged with freon, all at $700+ later.
