4th Generation Fuel door clearance...

Just so you know...it's not about the door spring or problems opening the fuel door.

Picked up a 1997 Camry XLE V6 and had to replace a few things. Fuel door was sticking so I had to lube that. Replaced the spring initially cause I thought it was weak...it was just binding too much from the dirt in the hinge.

Anyways, I noticed the fuel door sticks out enough where you could probably git yer fingertips in there and pry it open (busting the latching mechanism). It sits out about a good 3/8" from the body. I noticed there's a big square hold on the door latch. Is there supposed to be something that goes on there to keep the door closed tighter? I didn't find any thing in the parts listing fer anything like that.

Cause if there isn't, I'm gonna make my own device just to pull it closer in...maybe like a pop in sleeve.

That looks like the hole where the fuel door latch engages, have you look at the latch itself, on the body side of it?

Yes...it's just the standard cable and pin. The operation works just fine...I'm just looking fer any other Gen 4 Camry owner/driver to take a peek at their fuel door and see if I'm missing something on mine.

How wide is the gap between the latch part and the actual door, the outside part of it?

It's about 1/4" to 3/8"...you can actually bounce the door. If I press the door all the way until it bottoms out...it's about flush with the body.

Someone may have pry it open at one time, the gap should be smaller than that; compare it with the hinge end of the door. You may just need to reduce the gap by squeezing or pressing it back tighter. Seems like you have all the parts there for it to work properly.

I figured as much...so that's why I'm trying to find out from the other Gen 4 owners what theirs look like. I've already got something in mind to reduce the gap.

The door nor the hinge are bent.

Toyota has the similar or same set up for just about all the vehicles with remote fuel door release.
