3rd Generation Help Electrical Problems

Hi!

I own a much-loved 1996 Camry 220 SEi manual. Lately, it started by occassionally refusing to lower windows, then proceeded to completley never lowering any windows at all. It was followed by failure of the central locking mechanisms together with lack of dash and rear break lights as well as parking lights.

All fuses are good!

I am good mechanically but have my greatest weaknesses in the electrical side of things.

Please guide me through how I will follow the problems to the logical conclusion. I suspect some grounding issues.

Best, patrick.

Check the wiring in the door conduit between the door and the body. It is very common to have wire breaking in there which would cause problems like you are describing.

How long from the first symptom to the last? Seconds? Days? Months?

NEO's point about the wires between the body and door are especially valid for the windows and locks. However, the lights are much more likely to be a fuse. I'm not familiar with the 220 SEi but the 5SFE has two cabin fuses that can cause this. Mine was a 10 amp fuse behind the coin door. It also shut down the cooling fans. I understand that there is a second fuse kind of hidden behind the steering wheel area. I've never tried to find this one. There was another thread that identified it pretty well. If you think it might apply to the 220 SEi you might do a search. I'm pretty sure that it was in this forum, this year.

Sounds like two problems.

Wiring Issues

Dear NEO and Kep,

Thank you for the ideas. I will check the wiring between the door and the body. My Camry is a 5SFE too! The trim level is what is indicated by the 220SEi.

Where did you say the fuse is? Behind the coin door? I have removed the plastic around the steering and found some relays and fuses there, but the fuses are all good. I do not know how to test relays. The strangest thing I have seen is that the turn signals (R or L) do not work but the hazards (All) work!!! The air conditioner and the blowers work just fine.

I am also searching for the thread Kep has mentioned...

I appreciate!

Best regards,
Patrick.
