Timing Belt Guide 1999 4cyl Camry

Hello all,

First my apologies for asking a question about something that is probably clear to all of you. However, I have read all the posts about changing timing belts for my Camry and they all tell me to install the timing belt guide "facing the cup side outward" this includes the manual (1999 Toyota Repair Manual vol 2, pg EM 24 step 6).

My question is what does "cup side outward" mean? Does it mean the hollow part of the cup that holds the coffee, i.e. the concave side of the cup faces out? Or does it mean the dome shaped outside of the coffee cup, i.e. convex shape faces out?

I think it means the concave side faces out? But I am not sure. Does anyone know for sure??

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Sounds like you are talking about the timing belt guide on the crankshaft pulley. The guide (or pulley flange) is removable. It is "dish" shaped. "Concave out" simply means that when installing the guide, slide it onto the crankshaft such that the outside diameter of the guide is furthest away from the timing belt. When you get it apart, it is obvious which way it goes back on. You will see teeth rub marks on the inside of the guide and no teeth marks on the outside of the guide. Slide the guide onto the crankshaft with the side with the teeth marks facing the timing belt.
